Somehow I never pictured Marvin lounging on the couch when I listened to his albums. Was his band funky or what? Those cats were groovin'.

According to the David Ritz bio, Marvin recorded all of his tracks while lounging on a sofa.

 I didn't know that! Marvin was the man.

Speaking (typing) as a singer (albeit a choral singer), I can tell you that lying down like that simply sucks as far as being able to really produce much breath support. Probably doesn't matter much if one is really close-miked -- but still, I would tend to think that sofa stuff would really have some kind of negative effect on tone and breath support.

Then again, with the way Marvin sings (not full voice, and isn't that practically all falsetto??), maybe breath support isn't/wasn't much of an issue.

Is this the Belgium footage? I know he's lying on the sofa singing at some point in that. But I have a clearer memory of the part where he's playing darts with the locals in some grimy Ostend boozer.

I knew about the stay in Belgium, but not about any "Belgium footage"!

No idea about the church thing, or about any of this clip, but if it is from Belgium, the "excile" years, that makes it very interesting....

25 years ago today.... "Father, father. We don't need to escalate."

I've been revisiting Donny Hathaway Live, which has his absolutely killer version from '71.
