Seconded!

Masters also did an album of/with grachan Moncur III that is more than a little worthy.

Yes, it is pretty spectacular!  And Harper is also on it (though not featured as such)

There's also a Mark Master's "Porgy & Bess" disc that Billy's on too -- on that same label (Capri), iirc.

Were you at the show that had Hutcherson's group and Dexter Gordon as well as Roach's quartet with Harper/Bridgewater/Workman?  I was there!

Funny you should ask. I was there on 5/30/77 which was about 5 months BEFORE I saw him headline with Max (11/3/77)! But I have his appearance with Dexter on my list as the "Billy Harper Quintet." You sure it was Max that night?

Yes, Max and a pianoless quartet - Max, Harper, Bridgewater I believe, Workman (who took an amazing extended solo similar to his Prayer for Peace solo with Tolliver).   Hutch had West Coast guys - James Leary, Eddie Marshall and I believe George Cables and Manny Boyd.  Dex used Hutch's rhythm section, and had a trumpet player (I think Eddie Henderson - it wasn't Woody, who I never saw live).  As reference for date, Jon Hendricks was performing "Evolution of the Blues" at a theatre nearby - I saw that the same week.

The leader has made a series of solid dates with varied and interesting personnel. But this one is tops, imo.

I've been meaning to pick up a copy of this for 10-12 years.  One of these days!!

I have it, and can second Jim's recommendation.  He's the one that hipped me to it some time ago.  BTW, thanks for the lead on that Masters Porgy & Bess set.  Ordered it this morning, $5.98 Amazon Prime.

Not to derail - BUT does anyone have the Denon solo bass The Works Of Workman?

Don't think it ever made it to CD.

Do own the Denon vinyl and it is both musically and sonically magnificent .... unfortunately never released on CD ....

OK - we may be talking about different shows. My notes show Woody and Louis Hayes with Dexter that night.

Found this poster on Google. The May 30 show would be the one I saw.

Dex was not originally scheduled for the show I went to, it was the Roach and Hutcherson groups.  Dex had just come back to America, and was a late, impromptu add-on, using Hutcherson's rhythm section and, I believe, Henderson.  So I'm thinking it was very late 1976 maybe.

Makes sense.

I am interested, but not at this price. Perhaps others feel different.

l would be interested in "Knowledge Of Self" at that price, but this was never reissued as CD .... so have to settle with my vinyl version :D ....

I've never heard Knowledge of Self.

I listened to the whole of The Believer on YouTube, and I feel it is not as great as Somalia, Soran-Bushi, B.H. and Soul of an Angel. I added a Capra Black Japanese mini-LP to my collection instead.

Me too, one of the very few CD's I'd pony up that kind of $ to buy.

I like The Believer even if it's not top-tier Billy. I bought it from his fan club merch table when I saw him at Yoshi's quite a few years ago. I think it's a needle drop 'home-made' CDR, though.

Most of the Baystate Spiritual Series are a not cheaper and easier to get. A pity. Probably because the demand for this Harper disc is higher?
