Quasimado Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Interesting read. http://langtech.dickinson.edu/Sirena/Issue2/Chambers.pdf Q Quote
BillF Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Yes, interesting! I first noticed Bob Zieff's name among composer credits on some of my Chet Baker albums and later found lots of references to him when I read James Gavin's Deep in a Dream: the Long Night of Chet Baker. Quote

Niko - that's remarkable! Jack Chambers has this to say (from his article): "As for integrity, some of the toughest minds among Zieff’s contemporaries wilted and ended up pandering to pop tastes, most notably Miles Davis but also Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock and numerous others, even Gil Evans. Zieff escaped all that, and the price he paid, though he may not consider it a price at all, was to live a quiet, scholarly life, feeling the affection of his students and the admiration of the part-timers —doctors, salesmen, and mostly (like him) teachers — he recruited to play his uncompromising music." Chamber's Twardzik book seems almost as obscure as Zieff. Q Quote
Late Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Thanks for posting. Has anyone here heard Dick Wetmore's Bethlehem album (mentioned in the Chambers piece) that contains Zieff compositions? I'm guessing it hasn't been reissued on compact disc, but maybe in Japan? Would love to hear it. Quote

Late Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Thanks for that link Niko. I hadn't heard/read anything about that comp until now. Looks like one to pick up. Anyone heard the Bob Zieff Orchestra in Pennsylvania? Quote
Late Posted May 2, 2022 Report Posted May 2, 2022 If Bob Zieff made a bossa nova record in 1959, it might sound something like this: The whole album's only 23 minutes. You kind of have to listen to the whole thing to get the 20th century classical vibe. The harmonies are blowing me away. Quote
