7/4 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Of course, the pitch bendy stuff is very cool too. Those were the days...before fusion was a bad word.... Quote
7/4 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 the Future Scientologists of Corea actually sound pretty good there. I liked them before Chick chased Bill out of the group with graph paper. Hmm...I seem to remember that he killed Circle the same way. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 For a second, I thought this was a thread about the band Pitchblende. Quote
Larry Kart Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Shoot me, but I always thought that Chick's use of this device was among the silliest things imaginable, though I didn't and don't feel that way when it's a guitarist. In part it's because it sounds so cheesy on a synthesizer (if indeed that's the correct term for what Chick is playing here), but it's also that for me there's such a vast difference between bending a string and twisting a dial, especially when Chick would scrunch up his face and shoulders body while doing so. 7/4 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 guitar sounds = guitarist face. blame Jan Hammer. . Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 guitar sounds = guitarist face. blame Jan Hammer. While we're at it there a few other things we could blame on him... Quote

Soul Stream Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Nerdy jazz majors of the 70's at colleges everywhere, put away your Coltrane LP and come out of your dorm rooms! Unite! The future of jazz is upon us, it involves dudes, scales played fast, tight white pants and pitch bending!!!! Quote
Shawn Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Bill Connors? How did I miss this cat up until now? Quote

But twisting dials is hard work! You have to watch out that you don't develop tendonitis. This is one of the better editions of RTF I think. Anything with Bill is okay with me... They certainly look like they were having fun. Quote
Joe G Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Bill Connors? How did I miss this cat up until now? I haven't seen his name anywhere since a friend gave me a cassette dub about 10 years ago. Wonder what's he's been up to. Quote
JSngry Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Geez, a Rhodes and a mini-moog (right?), that was it. Damn, I see lounge players using more gear nowadays... Not bad, actually, although nowhere near Weather Report/Herbie level of substance. Bill Connors, yeah, good player, fine player. Al Screameola brought the show, but took away the fun. This stuff is fun, especially watching Lenny White & Stanley Clarke only a few years removed from their Joe Henderson gig. Far, far worse things could & would happen in the name of "fusion" before too much longer... Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted April 3, 2008 Author Report Posted April 3, 2008 Nope, not a Minimoog. It's an Odessey, ARP's answer to the Minimoog. Another video has chick playing the ARP Pro-soloist (Tony Banks used one a lot with Genesis). And the video of Chick and the Downbeat guys from 1975 that you posted has him playing the Minimoog. He had it all! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I don't really like pitch bend on synths either, whenever Herbie does it, it drives me nuts especially when he uses the synth emulation of the clavinet as he has for the past 20 years. I never understood the faces when your just bending a tone wheel, I like to make fun of that with my keyboard Quote

Wonder what's he's been up to. Three fusionish albums that sounded kind like Holdsworth in the '80s - I like them - and nothing until a few years ago he put out a straight ahead album that was a bit of a disapointment. Quote
7/4 Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Bill Connors? How did I miss this cat up until now? He was on a Stanley Clarke album with Jan Hammer and Tony Williams. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 And, curiously, with Paul Bley and Jimmy Giuffre in the late '70s. Quote

The fusion albums were what I had a copy of. Quote
