mikelz777 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 (edited) Complete 1955-1957 Quartet Quintet Sextet Sessions [bOX SET] This is a 6-CD set currently listed for $18.99 at Amazon as of this writing. (see the link below) It indicates shipping within 1 to 3 weeks but if they actually fulfill the order at this price, it's well worth the wait. Why would this be selling so cheap? I thought I got a good deal when I paid $48.00 for mine. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-1955-1957-Q...9452&sr=8-2 Edited April 2, 2008 by mikelz777 Quote

Aggie87 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Sorry - order it, I don't care. It IS a good deal. My comments were just based on the question about why it's a good price. Quote
Claude Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 It's probably mispriced. The official price in Europe is 35€. http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/record_po...?record_id=4686 I generally find the spanish reissues overpriced, given the small investment by the label. But maybe it's better for the official labels if the public domain reissues are not too cheap. Quote

But maybe it's better for the official labels if the public domain reissues are not too cheap. Doesn't seem likely if the stuff remains unissued, as it usually does, by the official label. The reissues are normally priced at what the market will bear and that probably means a fairly hefty profit margin, which enables discounting. MG Quote
bertrand Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Everything on this set is previously issued, correct? Bertrand. Quote
mikelz777 Posted April 3, 2008 Author Report Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) Everything on this set is previously issued, correct? Bertrand. Yes, 12 discs worth. Four Five and Six, Presenting Jackie McLean, Lights Out!, Jackie's Pal, McLean's Scene, Bird Feathers, Jackie McLean & Co., Alto Madness, Strange Blues, A Long Drink Of The Blues, Makin' The Changes and Jackie McLean Plays Fat Jazz. I see that since the initial post the shipping time has changed to 4 to 7 weeks. Doesn't sound too promising but I could be wrong. Edited April 3, 2008 by mikelz777 Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I've got most of those on OJC CD, Prestige LP or in one case, Jubilee vinyl. I guess if Concord isn't doing their end justice and the Jubilee/Ad Lib catalog is in the hands of Fresh Sound, well... Quote
bertrand Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Presenting Jackie McLean is the AD-LIB session from 10/21/55, correct? If so, I do have everything. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
JohnS Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 This is a very nice set. It's all there and and, if I remember correctly in the right order. If you have no qualms about the grey issue I'd certainly recommend you go for it. Quote
Claude Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I haven't compared the tracklist with the original discs. Did they try to combine two sessions on one CD or is the set strictly chronological, which could mean that some sessions are spread over two discs? Quote
Kyo Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I haven't compared the tracklist with the original discs. Did they try to combine two sessions on one CD or is the set strictly chronological, which could mean that some sessions are spread over two discs? It's strictly chronological and some sessions were indeed spread over two discs (all of those CDs are chock-full with music, the shortest clocking in at 73:18 and three going over 79 minutes!). But it's not like the original releases were much better in that respect. For example, the quartet date with Mal Waldron from February 15 1957 was spread over four LPs/CDs originally - here all of the tracks are on one disc. Quote

Sometimes Amazon really misprices these things and only corrects later. I recall that I bought the Billie Holiday Columbia set put out by Definitive for about $20 and that was a 10 disc set. As far as this set, I have everything except perhaps Presenting Jackie McLean (have to go look) so not too tempting. Of course now that I look, I don't have Presenting JM and it generally runs $14 for a different grey market release. Amazon price is still $18.99 as of today. Edited April 3, 2008 by ejp626 Quote
relyles Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I don't own much of this at all. I placed an order. For the price it is worth the risk. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Thanks for the tip. This one has got to be worth a shot - have maybe less than half of it on vinyl. Delivery estimate - May 21st. Quote
Tom in RI Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 Now its down to $17.99. I have my fingers crossed. Quote
mikelz777 Posted May 20, 2008 Author Report Posted May 20, 2008 (edited) Did this ever actually pan out for anyone? I see that neither the set or the great pricing is currently being offered via Amazon and that the current best price is $70.00 through a marketplace seller. Edited May 20, 2008 by mikelz777 Quote
Free For All Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I ordered one (for the $21.98 price) and my Amazon account currently indicates it will be shipped between May 29th and June 11th. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Just got a message from Amazon saying this order has been cancelled due to non-availability. Looks like fiction, folks ! Quote
JohnS Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 I paid around £20 for mine when it first came out. Great set, great value but unfortunately some of these spanish things go oop quite quickly. I don't know if they ever repress - a look at the Fresh Sound website shows numerous items as currently unavailable. In the vinyl days my personal rule was to buy when you see it, if you delay then you might not get the chance again. Same applies now. Quote
Claude Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 (edited) Maybe it's only temporary, because of unexpectedly high demand. It would not make sense to let go OOP a topselling title for which no licensing is due. Edit: according to the Fresh Sounds website it is currently available (€ 34.95 (USD 41.56)) Edited May 21, 2008 by Claude Quote
relyles Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 I received a message that my order was shipped on the 20th. Quote
captainwrong Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 I'm still showing expected between 15-27. I have something else on the order that was even a pre-order which also seems to be in order limbo. What are the odds I'd put two items on one order and have them both be perpetually out of stock?
