The Eaton is the only one I've not heard, and the rest are varying degrees of good to great, with the Doug and Jean Carn titles being the crown gems, but lots of others very nice. I really enjoy Calvin Keys (Shawn Neeq), both Rudolph Johnson releases, both Awakening titles and the Chester Thompson. Purchased the Walter Bishop Jr. (Coral Keys), Henry Franklin (The Skipper) and a best of collection last year. I'm not certain I'll get into the Doug Carn but I'll keep an open mind. I saw both Gene Russell titles in an area music store a few days ago but paused on purchasing them. I'd like to hear them on Spotify first before making a decision. All in all, I love the label! Other than that, I am with @Pim on the Black Jazz releases. Solid interesting stuff that I don't regret putting on, but it doesn't grab me in the same way. felser Posted March 7, 2022 Report Share Posted March 7, 2022 (edited) To me, the Doug and Jean Carn CD's are the jewel crowns of the Black Jazz catalog, but it's all at least interesting, some wonderful. It is the only label that I own a complete run of their music (I don't count the 21st Century Doug Carn solo set). I'm less enamored of Tribe on musical and sonic terms. Some interesting music, but some seems awfully indulgent to me. The Marcus Belgrave is my favorite from that label. I admire what both labels were about missionally, and both hold great historic interest. Strata Records (the Kenny Cox label which inspired Strata-East) was also out of Detroit in the same era, and should be in the same conversation, though their catalog was also all over the place, even more than Tribe's, though to me it had more high points than Tribe. YMMV on all of this. In fact, I must have posted in this thread years ago but I'm too lazy to look... hopefully I'm not about to repeat myself... Very happy with the latest Black Jazz reissues from Real Gone... a lot of those have been unavailable & hard to find for a few years. I was able to fill some holes in my collection. Favorites for me are all of the Doug Carn records, both LPs from The Awakening, both from Rudolph Johnson (talk about someone who deserves wider recognition! ), and the two Henry Franklins. There are still a bunch I'm not familiar with yet though. As far as Tribe goes, A Message From the Tribe is one of my all-time favorite records. Reflections in the Sea of Nurnen is right up there also. And there's a lot of Wendell Harrison's work post-Tribe Records period that is outstanding.
