barnaba.siegel
I wonder if it's not the case of source album. The "Shawn-Neeq" sounds bad from the P-Vine CD and any sources from the web. Not like "audiophile bad", rather "bad bad" - like it was transfered directly from LP or the master was flawed.

jazzbo
That honestly does NOT come up when I use the search within amazon. Thanks. I have it on the way from Dusty Groove. I've liked all those they released on cd so far. And had none of the titles before.

The Eaton is the only one I've not heard, and the rest are varying degrees of good to great, with the Doug and Jean Carn titles being the crown gems, but lots of others very nice. I may just take this as my guide on buying these reissues. I don't have any apart from The Awakening which was purchased on your recommendation (and I love it). barnaba.siegel
Anyone have bought the Calvin Keys album from Real Gone Music? I'm wondering what's the sound quality.
jazzbo
I have the cd version. Sounds very good--I have bought all but one of their releases (have the one I did not buy in a Japanese version) and I have no complaints with the mastering/sound quality. romualdo
Octave Lab label (Japan) has issued some of the Tribe releases on CD early last year (March) plus two later, non Tribe, Wendell Harrison releases & a Doug Hammond one 1. A Message from The Tribe (Complete Edn) - double CD that contains the three different LP versions - interesting history (listened to a recent interview with Phil Ranelin who remembers the first sessions for A Message... & Evening With the Devil being recorded in a Grosse Pointe basement in Detroit) 2. An Evening with the Devil - basically same recording date as #1 plus the first side of this LP was included on half of the initial (first) version of A Message..... (gets confusing). This CD also has the bonus "original" versions included 3. Doug Hammond - Reflections in the Sea of Nurnen 4. Harold McKinney - Voices & Rhythms of the Creative Profile https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/OTLCD-2475 https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/OTLCD-2476 https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/OTLCD-2477 https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/OTLCD-2478

Tom 1960
I've gotten around to purchasing a number of issues recently. I really enjoy Calvin Keys (Shawn Neeq), both Rudolph Johnson releases, both Awakening titles and the Chester Thompson. Purchased the Walter Bishop Jr. (Coral Keys), Henry Franklin (The Skipper) and a best of collection last year. I'm not certain I'll get into the Doug Carn but I'll keep an open mind. I saw both Gene Russell titles in an area music store a few days ago but paused on purchasing them. I'd like to hear them on Spotify first before making a decision. All in all, I love the label! Pim
I do like the Calvin Keys. Part from that the music is hardly ever bad but fails to really impress me.
Rabshakeh
That new reissue of Proceed With Caution is also good. Great cover too. I'm a big fan of the Franklins, which i think are really good. Other than that, I am with @Pim on the Black Jazz releases. Solid interesting stuff that I don't regret putting on, but it doesn't grab me in the same way. Tribe on the other hand...
felser
To me, the Doug and Jean Carn CD's are the jewel crowns of the Black Jazz catalog, but it's all at least interesting, some wonderful. It is the only label that I own a complete run of their music (I don't count the 21st Century Doug Carn solo set). I'm less enamored of Tribe on musical and sonic terms. Some interesting music, but some seems awfully indulgent to me. The Marcus Belgrave is my favorite from that label. I admire what both labels were about missionally, and both hold great historic interest. Strata Records (the Kenny Cox label which inspired Strata-East) was also out of Detroit in the same era, and should be in the same conversation, though their catalog was also all over the place, even more than Tribe's, though to me it had more high points than Tribe. YMMV on all of this. jazzbo
I agree with John--the Carn releases are the real gems for me though there are only one or two that I don't like. I am so glad the most recent reissue program was complete, they sound good and were a great set of reissues.
webbcity
Big fan of both of these labels. In fact, I must have posted in this thread years ago but I'm too lazy to look... hopefully I'm not about to repeat myself... Very happy with the latest Black Jazz reissues from Real Gone... a lot of those have been unavailable & hard to find for a few years. I was able to fill some holes in my collection. Favorites for me are all of the Doug Carn records, both LPs from The Awakening, both from Rudolph Johnson (talk about someone who deserves wider recognition! ), and the two Henry Franklins. There are still a bunch I'm not familiar with yet though. As far as Tribe goes, A Message From the Tribe is one of my all-time favorite records. Reflections in the Sea of Nurnen is right up there also. And there's a lot of Wendell Harrison's work post-Tribe Records period that is outstanding. Teasing the Korean
Have there been any releases of Reflections in the Sea of Nurnen since the Japanese CD?  I had a pristine copy of the LP, which I bought for 25 cents and then sold for an absurd amount of money.  I was disappointed in the sound of the CD. Dub Modal
I don't have enough of either of these labels. From Tribe I have the Pure Pleasure LP reissue of Nurnen and the Tribe reissue of Message From. Only one Rudolph Johnson Black Jazz album.
