Whoa! Where is this taking place? It's not the one in Idaho, is it?

Hampton, Virginia (right by Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News, etc.)

I didn't look to see who else was playing, I got sick just thinking about the main acts.

I kind of figured that it probably wasn't the one in Moscow, Idaho, unless their mainstream focus had radically shifted. Stranger things have happened... Smooth jazz seems to be in decline on radio but it surely looks like the promoters of these so-called "jazz" festivals still think that this sort of thing will sell.

Is that all there is, sometimes the headliners can be crap but you can still find some hidden gems that won't be advertised because of not being names ?

i applaud you for being the winner of the "half full glass of water thinker award"!!! i wish . . .

I attended a couple of times in the early years of this "festival" - early '70's - and it seemed to be one of those George

Wein package deals, the kind you'd find in many places - good, but nothing unique. Heard Cannonball Adderley, McCann and Harris, Buddy Rich, B.B. King (among others). Of course, from today's perspective, that sounds pretty good...

The word 'jazz' long ago detached itself to lead an independent life from the music we associate it with.

Most people may not enjoy the music but the word continues to be very powerful with its images of cool, sophistication:

So, I'm never surprised to see it used as a marketing tool for all sorts of things with only marginal connection with mainly improvised music - or, as in this case, no connection at all!

I dunno, Gladys Knight, Jill Scott, & Maze, that sounds like a damn good time to me, even if it ain't "jazz". Peabo Bryson, too, although if he gets sick and cancels, hey...

Those other cats, though... uh...

No.

Maybe if they had gotten at least 1 actual "jazz" musician (Shorter, Hancock, Sonny, etc) then I could deal with it. At least I get to go see Greyboy Allstars in a couple weeks.

Thank you, thank you, but in all seriousness, i've noticed that often even "big time jazz festival" will have headliners that do not belong in the jazz sphere to attract a more mainstream crowd while the jazzmen not having the same notoriety were put aside promotion wise. To give you an idea in Montreal the big names that have been announced for this year are so far; James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and Woody Allen  .

Unfortunately, in this case (Hampton festival), what you see is what you get and that ain't good

The problem is that its those "other cats" who are actually marketed as "jazz" outside of the Hampton "Jazz" Festival.

What is Jazz?

Developing software in a team is much like playing an instrument in a band. Both require a balance of collaboration and virtuosity. Jazz defines a vision for the way products can integrate to support this kind of collaborative work, and a technology platform to deliver on this vision.

Jazz is an IBM Rational project to build a scalable, extensible team collaboration platform for integrating work across the phases of the development lifecycle. We believe Jazz will help teams build software more effectively while making the software development activity more productive and enjoyable.
