Dan Gould
But the idea of blocking players goes back a ways, and its what makes the non-waiver deadline of the last day of July at 4 PM ET an important part of the season. And don't forget, the trading deadline used to be BEFORE the all-star break! (Mid-June, if I recall correctly) Before my time (or at least before I paid this much attention). I won't comment on what that would make you. Edited August 15, 2008 by Dan Gould
Big Al
At least the Rays should do OK this weekend against the Rangers, if they pitch a little and hit a little (easier to do the latter) (sorry Al). But then they get the Angels, so hopefully we'll close the gap by this time next week. Hey, it is what it is. I smell another three-game sweep around the corner. The Rangers offense is playing like they don't care anymore. Who can blame them? The pitching is so horrendous right now, why bother trying to put a bunch of runs on the board when the pitching is only going to give it away (hell, sometimes before the Rangers even get to bat)? Patrick
Cliff Lee complete game win against the major league best Angels, now 17-2! 8H, 2ER, 2BB, 6K. Benefited from a couple of double plays, but just got it done. The only reason to consider watching Indians games at this point.
Big Al
The Rangers have scored a whopping ZERO runs in their last 19 innings and only four runs in their last three games. Two shut-outs in a row. The free fall is in full swing. At this point, I'd be surprised if they score another run all year.

Nine K's, two-hitter (probably should have been a one-hitter as the first "hit" hit outfielder Justin Ruggiano squarely in the glove. He should have caught it, but he did dive, or flop forward, or something, so ...) Regardless, great performance by Garza. ... And the Yankees are now 10.5 games out in the East and I think it's safe to pretty much write 'em off at this point. Angels coming to town next week. Got some time off so I'm definitely going up to St. Pete to catch one of those.

When that started, I thought maybe for once the mid-season free-fall was happening to someone else and not us for once. You'd think I'd learn after 35 years of watching these guys. On a happier note: Cubbies have won five in a row!!! Oh please Lord LET THIS BE THE YEAR!!!

Glad to see one of the 5 guys from the Tex trade (Harrison) is starting to pay off....I bet by the time all is said and done, it's going to look like that Boof Bonser, Francisco Liriano, and Joe Nathan for A.J. Its the beauty of baseball - the crappier you look, the more likely it is that a win is coming. The Yankees can explain it in great detail, as they've had great practice looking crappy. papsrus
Upton was benched Saturday for lack of hustle on the base paths Friday. Maddon yanked him in the middle of the sixth inning Friday after he dogged it to first with one out and the Rangers completed a double play to end the inning. That's the second time in the past few weeks he's had his ass planted on the bench for not running it out on the base paths. ... Great fielder, nice hitter, leads the team in steals, but apparently not the brightest bulb.
Tom in RI
Its a case of Upton being Manny. Hey Dan, if the Sox make a play for Texeira in the off season can you see any way they can keep him and Youkillis and Lowell? Personally, I think we coming up on Youk's best 3-4 seasons and I really want to keep him around for his hitting and versatility.
Dan Gould
Hey Dan, if the Sox make a play for Texeira in the off season can you see any way they can keep him and Youkillis and Lowell? Personally, I think we coming up on Youk's best 3-4 seasons and I really want to keep him around for his hitting and versatility. Well, the obvious way is to ask Youk to play LF, and send Jason Bay away. Bay is signed at a reasonable cost for one more year and is obviously an all-around talent. Shouldn't be too hard to move him. Of course that also requires asking Youk to move to LF, where its a given that his skills will not be nearly as good as they are in the infield corners, beyond the fact that its really pretty disrespectful of a reigning Gold Glove first baseman. If the team is serious about getting younger though, they should keep Bay, move Youk to third and figure out a way to send Mikey Lowell away. Of the three, I think he's the weakest offensively, and more likely to decline going forward. Make no mistake, I like Lowell a lot, but keeping Bay and Youk and adding Teix to a team that is otherwise very young (Jacoby, Pedroia, Lowrie) would give us an extraordinary group of every day players to go with a great group of young or in their prime starters. Dynasty city! And a great contrast with the Yankees who are still lacking in the ability to deliver major league quality position players and will most likely keep running Damon, Abreu and the rapidly aging Jeter, Posada and A-Rod out there. Our only "aging" problem would be Tek, if they keep him, and Drew, who isn't in his decline phase yet but will be by the time that contract expires. Maybe referring to Millwood? Yeah, I don't think he's any good, but I don't hate him. As far as Matt Harrison goes, I never heard of the guy before last night, and he pitched brilliant shut-out ball. But yeah, Berigan: just once I'd like to be right..... hey, wait a second.... Ahem.... THE RANGERS ARE NOT GOING TO FINISH IN FIRST PLACE THIS YEAR. NOT A CHANCE. NO WAY IN HELL. papsrus
Despite the best efforts of their patchwork bullpen to blow a 7-2 lead (loading the bases in the 9th and issuing an intentional walk to Hamilton to force in a run and bring the potential WINNING run to the plate!!!), the Rays hang on at Texas and open up 4.5 game lead in AL East. Coming home for three with the mighty Angels (Tropical Storm Fay notwithstanding). Somebody explain to me how a quality major league relief pitcher like Balfour suddenly can't throw the ball anywhere near the plate when he's in a closer situation (in fact, he threw the first ball in the Hamilton intentional walk right over Navarro's head and to the freakin' backstop). He literally lost the plate completely out there tonight. There was no way he was going to find it again. ... Just throw strikes and let your defense do its thing. These guys come in and suddenly think they have to strike everyone out. Then they start overthrowing, nibbling, bouncing the freakin' ball off the plate ... Arghhhhh ... Infuriating!! How about having your ace (in name only because he's pitching like 2007 was the fluke and 2006 is the reality) give up NINE FUCKING RUNS en route to a pathetic 15-4 shellacking at the hands one of the crappiest offenses in the majors, to complete a sweep at home and leave you with no wild card lead at all? That's fucking infuriating.

Patrick
What more could CC do? Would they even still be in the WC race without him? He's winning, saving the bullpen with every start, swinging the lumber, and packing the house. ...sliding into third, I'm not so sure about.... Some of the ESPN guys doing the game suggested that if he continued to perform at this level for the balance of the season, he should get consideration for NL MVP, recognizing that he won't have enough NL starts to get considered for Cy Young. Not sure if I'd go that far. They mentioned Sutcliffe's partial season with the Cubs (another escapee from Cleveland!*). RS finished 4th in NL MVP voting that year (1984) after going 16-1 and the Cubs won the Division (holy cow!). *Hopefully, Matt LaPorta will be at least as good as Joe Carter was (...and not so much like Mel Hall).
