jazzbo Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 (edited) The Garners have come out on Chronogical Classics in the corresponding years cds. The Moody and Gillespie sides also should have come out on Classics. I would have to check. . . can't remember precisely. Edited October 2, 2003 by jazzbo Quote
Brad Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 In looking at the worlds records web site, it doesn't look like the Moody and Gillespie cds have yet been reissued by Classics although they probably will be coming out soon. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 There are Blue Note sides on the first Moody Classics, but you're right Brad, these are likely the Modernists and not the with strings sides; I'm too far away from my collection right now to be certain! Quote
jazzbo Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 What I really want to hear are the Fats Sadi sides! Where are THOSE? Quote
The Mule Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 I actually had the 10" Sadi Blue Note record in my hands at a used record store in Santa Barbara, CA, but the owner wanted $500 for it!!!! Quote
mike casinghino Posted October 2, 2003 Author Report Posted October 2, 2003 (edited) i'd love to get the fats sadi recording on cd myself. that recording was made in 1954. the jazz ma tazz website shows a gillispie 1952 cd coming out on chronological classics in nov. that's when horn of plenty was recorded. maybe it will be on that one. does anyone have any ideas on the best site to order chronological classic cd's from? mikeweil Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 The Moody and Gillespie sides were licenses of Vogue recordings; the Gillespies were on one of RCA France's Vogue CD series a few years ago, don't know about the Moodys. The Sadi material originally was Vogue LD 212 and still awaits a reissue. It was recorded on May 8, 1953! Only the Sadi quartets with Martial Solal were on one of the three Solal CDs in that series - these were from 1956. They are very nice! Quote
mikeweil Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 Moody recorded two albums in Paris in July, 1951 for Vogue, one with strings, which was licensed by Blue Note, and one with a quintet. As far as I know both were not among those reissued by BMG France. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 cduniverse will probably have the best prices. I like www.worldsrecords.com though, as they get them earlier somehow (import them directly?) sometimes, and they're a great outfit that I like to support, though they're full priced there. Here is what Worlds has for the 1952 Gillespie Classics: In 1937, Dizzy Gillespie visited Paris as a member of Teddy Hill's band. He returned to France 11 years later, leading his own spectacular big band which created a huge sensation in Europe. Four years later, in early 1952, Gillespie was again in the French capital - this time as a soloist. Since he had no longer a regular band of his own, Blue Star and Vogue recorded the visiting star with a bewildering variety of local artists and expatriate Americans including Don Byas, Art Simmons and Arnold Ross. Includes Cocktails For Two / Cognac Blues / Moon Nocturne / Sabla y blu / Blue And Sentimental / Just One More Chance / Fragile / Hurry Home / Afro Paris / Say Eh! / I Cover The Waterfront / The Man I Love / Night And Day and others. I'm not sure what tunes to look for but the Vogue material that was leased may be here. Quote
mike casinghino Posted October 3, 2003 Author Report Posted October 3, 2003 dizzy gillespie- horn of plenty- was from two sessions. it looks like the first session (from mar.1952) titles are on your list, hurry home & afro paris. the second session(apr.1952)titles are not. the titles are, lady bird, somebody loves me,she's funny that way, wrap your trouble in dreams sweet lorraine, everything happens to me. maybe that disc in nov. will have the rest. thanks to everyone for the info. brownie Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 The Sadi material originally was Vogue LD 212 and still awaits a reissue. It was recorded on May 8, 1953! Only the Sadi quartets with Martial Solal were on one of the three Solal CDs in that series - these were from 1956. They are very nice! The Sadi Vogue 10-incher was reissued a few years ago as a 12-inch LP in Japan with the original cover. Quote
mike casinghino Posted October 6, 2003 Author Report Posted October 6, 2003 i wonder why the fats sadi recording was reissued on lp rather than cd? Quote
brownie Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 Because the Japanese are serious about jazz and they know that vinyl is better. They issued quite a number of Vogue 10-inchers some 2 or 3 years ago. Some were reissued on 10-inchers, a few - including the Sadi - cmae out as 12-inchers. They also reissued most of them as CDs but have not seen the Sadi in that format. Quote
Bluerein Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 The Moody 1951 sides are (almost complete) issued on a BMG Disques Vogue CD called James Moddy & Frank Foster in Paris. The Quintet session is complete (8 tracks) and the with strings session all save 2 (?). The Foster Quartet session is from 1954 and also very good. The CD has number 09026-68208-2 and is of course long OOP but should be trackable somewhere (usually as a cut out). Cheers, Reinier Quote
mikeweil Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 The Sadi Vogue 10-incher was reissued a few years ago as a 12-inch LP in Japan with the original cover. Is it worth the search, do you have it, btw, and do ya like it? Quote
mike casinghino Posted October 7, 2003 Author Report Posted October 7, 2003 (edited) brownie, i should have said, why not on lp & cd? i know there are a lot of people who still prefer lp's. do you have an e-mail address, maybe we should flood them with requests for the sadi on cd! brownie Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 Is it worth the search, do you have it, btw, and do ya like it? I have it and like it. Nice and very rare session. Got the Japanese reissue LP when some copies became available in France. I was looking for this session after being disappointed at Vogue BMG when they reissued a lot of excellent CDs several years ago including rare sessions with Bobby Jaspar but failed to include that Sadi date. Jaspar is featured on seven of the eight tracks. And young Bobby Jaspar could blow! Mike, sorry there is no e-mail adress. May be J.A.W. knows a source? Quote
