yes, newbury sold the same item three days ago for $415. both auctions began bidding at 99 cents. quite a contrast to the evans set that the infamous norman's of nyc is selling for a buy-it-now price of $599.

The set went for $311. I'm assuming this is OOP? Remember when Verve had those ridiculous sales on this box a few years back on ebay and then refused to honor most of it.

A few years back you could walk into a newbury comics and snag it for about $130 bucks

"Beautiful rust?" I cursed the first time I found that the rust was coming off on the boxed sets filed next to this ignorantly designed boxed set. Where was Mosaic when we needed them to do this set right? The microscopic print in the booklet is also of little use. The designer of both should have been kicked out of the business of designing boxed sets.

Your criticism of the design could be applied to any number of Verve sets, They thought they were being cute when the placed photos over text of the same density, for example. In case of the Evans box, the rust never bothered me much, although I find it somewhat offensive, esthetically. What really bothers me about that release is the excessive inclusion of alternate takes, which not only would have greatly disturbed Bill, bit also made no sense, there being very little difference between takes, in most cases. The "complete" gimmick is often just that, an excuse to cram releases with every scrap and thus increase the number of CDs and, of course, the price.

The most ludicrous case of such idiocy appeared on Mosaic's Benedetti release, where a tin-eared jerk (whose name we all know) threw in literally every scrap, including "tracks" that lasted less than 10 seconds and were identified as "possibly Lover Man."

In regards to the Evans box, I both agree and disagree with you, Chris. I was happy to get the additional live material, all of which has value, but I think 3 discs worth of outtakes from the "From Left To Right" sessions is excessive.

As for the Benedetti, set, there's no pleasing everybody. There are those people (and we all know a few) who absolutely need to have every scrap, and there are those who are more judicious in their purchases. My criterion has always been "is the thing worth listening to?", as I suspect is yours and most people's. Years ago I had a conversation with a label owner about a poor quality Parker release he had issued, asking (politely) how he could justify such a bad sounding release. His response was that you are damned if you do by those who expect quality, and you are damned if you don't by those who would accuse you of sitting on material and not sharing it. I didn't buy the Benedetti set because I didn't think it was essential, and I think Mosaic could consider a "best of" set. Btw, as it turns out, the Benedetti set is not complete. After Mosaic made their deal with Benedetti's brother, more material turned up in the hands of another relative, and they were unable to agree on a price.
