Jazzmoose Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 I realize that this is hardly a "new release" at this point, but this forum made more sense than reissues, so... Anyone heard this? I heard one song from it months ago and was impressed enough to add it to my "want list", but as I no longer remember what I heard or why I liked it, I'm looking for some other opinions. What say you? Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 I very nearly passed this one by. Another MBB album! And Elvis Costello on a vocal track (who does he think he is?...Sting?!!!!)! But I heard a track on the radio that gripped me and have not regreted the purchase. My brain mentally deletes Costello (I just can't take his voice, I'm afraid). 'Devil Woman' with Frank Lacy on vocal is great. Nothing (stylistically) the MBB have not done wonderfully before but if you enjoy them you'll enjoy this. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 This is one of the best of the MBB cds if you ask me. I'd recommend it. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 30, 2003 Author Report Posted September 30, 2003 Thanks, guys. Bev, it could very well be that I heard a track with Costello and that was what hooked me; a weakness of my youth... I'll keep in on my "new CDs to buy" list! (And hopefully quit buying stuff from board members long enough to act on it!!) Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Oh, I know my Costello dislike is a personal thing. It's the voice! He's written some fine songs...'Shipbuilding' is up there with the best. But the voice! I know others feel the same way about Robert Wyatt yet he has an unconventional/unschooled voice that I love. In fact there's a nice idea. Wyatt as vocalist on a Mingus Big Band album. I could just hear him doing something like 'For Harry Carney'...though he'd need to write the lyrics. Quote
John Tapscott Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 This is a great album (in spite of Costello) and I think may be their best since Nostalgia in Times Square. And don't forget that it's not just the Big Band on this CD but the Mingus Orchestra on half the tracks, a smaller band, and very interesting. Quote
Tjazz Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 Elvis Costello sings and it was at the library, so I gave it a spin (and copy to cdr). Quote
