Big Al Posted March 14, 2004 Report Posted March 14, 2004 picked up iron city yesterday. i've listened to alot of bjp lately and the organ playing on iron city isn't in the patton mode. i could be wrong. ss1 There was a thread on the old BNBB that talked about this; I believe the eventual consensus was that it was actually Larry Young, not John Patton. Someone reported that BJP at one time said, something to the effect of, "Man, how could anyone think that me & Larry sound the same? Of course that's Larry. Breaks my heart that people can't recognize him," or something like that; like he felt that he was getting undeserved credit for Larry's playing. Either way, BJP is still da man!!!! Quote
Big Al Posted March 14, 2004 Report Posted March 14, 2004 i've been spinning the natural soul rvg the last couple days I've always felt sorry for ol' Lou: having his show stolen from him by Patton & Green gettin' in the pocket & dueling to the death! Quote

Green and Pattoncontinuing their duel to the death. They had an ongoing duel spanning several sessions. Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 I have all the BN John Patton except Oh Baby! (Obviously, I agree with the premise of this thread.) What is the best sounding edition of that album? Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 1, 2004 Author Report Posted April 1, 2004 "oh baby" was just released in japan, i believe i have a cdr of "oh baby" tocj version you know what sucks about big john patton, that his shit is so hard too find. besides "let em roll", "along came john" and "got a good thing goin'" somewhere along the line someone is dropping the ball, BIG time ss1 Quote
sidewinder Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 I just got hold of a copy of 'Let Em Roll' this weekend, as a US import at Tower. This one is so hot it's radioactive - can't believe I held off so long before hearing it. Fantastic stuff once again from Big John and Grant ! Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 1, 2004 Author Report Posted April 1, 2004 "the shadow of your smile" might be my all time fav patton song. i was spinnin' it over the weekend at work. ss1 Quote
sidewinder Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 Soul - it's definitely the coolest version I've ever heard of that tune. Listening also to 'Boogaloo' over the past few days. One of my favourite of the 'Rare Grooves'.. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 1, 2004 Author Report Posted April 1, 2004 (edited) i've got it going right now this is the one i use to introduce people to big john. i just converted another with "blues for lou" pick up this one if you see it! ss1 Edited April 1, 2004 by Soulstation1 Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 The Mosaic box is well worth the $$$. If only Big John had recorded more. I keep toying with the idea of doing a John Patton tribute record. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 That would be really cool, B3-er! I find I listen to him more than any other organist. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 1, 2004 Author Report Posted April 1, 2004 (edited) b-3er which patton songs are your favorite to play? shiznet, i wish i could learn to play any patton groove my musical skillzzzzzzzz are worse than my computer skillzzzzzz ss1 Edited April 1, 2004 by Soulstation1 Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 I like Soul Woman and The Yodel. I also like the tunes on Boogaloo and Understanding. Very simple tunes, but plenty of room to explore. Quote
Big Al Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 Man, does it get any greeeazier than "The Yodel?" Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 2, 2004 Author Report Posted April 2, 2004 i must find a copy of steppin out by vick, i've finally got a chance to hear it i like when green plays the blues Quote
Guest akanalog Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 i got to say i do not like "the yodel". something about that rhythm i don't like... seems sort of constricting-too tight. i do really like the version of "amanda" on the same album though, as well as the rest of the album though it is not as progressive-sounding as i thought it would be. i also have to say that i feel that patton always uses this one lick a little too much for me-sort of an upward moving triplet kind of thing. that being said i find many of his BN albums among the most interesting albums i have heard in the mid to late sixties organ sort of mode (i find lou donaldson's albums in the sam vein very dull for instance) Quote
Big Al Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 "steppin out" is da shit Groovy avatar yo!!! Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 10, 2004 Author Report Posted April 10, 2004 (edited) steppin out MIGHT be the best patton/dixon/green cd out there. i have spun this one at least 30/40 times in the past week. any fav songs? ss1 my sis says "got a good thing goin'" sounds dated. Edited April 10, 2004 by Soulstation1 Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 10, 2004 Author Report Posted April 10, 2004 for the 10th time Doesn't "Davene" sound alot like "Ruby, my dear"?? Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 10, 2004 Report Posted April 10, 2004 is the beginning of "the rock" (the first 15 seconds) on the 07/28/2003 jrvg of the way i feel also muffled? thanks ss1 NO! Someone needs to give old Mosaic a good talking too unless of course the Select is taken from the original "stretched" tapes and the JRVG is taken from something else all together. And as good a sound translation as the mini-lp of "Oh, Baby!" And I'm not one for the RVGs anyhoo. Quote
