BruceH Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 ...and why does Mulligan look like an old gold prospecter ("Ders GOLD in dem dare hills, I kin SMELL it!") Quote
user0815 Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 That's a leisure suit, right? naw, that's no leisure suit. it's a tweed jacket. brubeck is cool, he would never wear a leisure suit. Quote
7/4 Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 When I saw Teo at the Knit, he was wearing a leisure suit. . Quote
Christiern Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Jim, did someone lay a pile of old Down Beats on you? Quote
jazzbo Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Jim's had the Downbeats forever. I think someone laid a scanner on Jim! But he survived! Quote
Christiern Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 It all begins to make sense now--it's Jim who's smiling. Scan-dinavian...never mind. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Why Are These Men Smiling? They just entered a barber shop, but left again saying "just kidding" ... Quote
Spontooneous Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 It's true. I've seen him. Pat Metheny's father is bald. Quote

JSngry Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 I've had the scanner, just not the HD space & processing speed to go a little crazy like this. But now... Besides, the few times I've "pulled out the archives" for people (and it's never easy to do that, since my closet is more like a train station during WWII than it is an organized place of storage...), entertainment & good discussion has ensued. That's my goal here, really. Because this stuff is a part of the history of the music (or at least of the business of this music), and because there's a lot of "quoting" and such and not very music straight up reproduction of original content/context. To me, original is always best! So fwiw, here it is. Quote
Free For All Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 I for one am enjoying these, Jim. I remember the 70s all too well (I think). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Mulligan looks like Yosemite Sam and Paul is sticking his finger in his ear. What more do you need to know? Jim seems to have started buying DB about 15 years later than I. Quote
JSngry Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 Share the history! Post some scans! Quote

Christiern Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Rita Weinstock, Bob's aunt, left me her Down Beat collection when she died. It pretty much covered the mid- or late-thirties and forties. I gave the bulk of it to my friend, Karl Knudsen, who was going to have it scanned, but I haven't heard what happened to the magazines after his death. I still have some early issues, in very fragile condition, and a bunch of '60s and '70s ones. Keep 'em coming, Jim! Quote

PHILLYQ Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 If you can find the Downbeat from the 70s that had an interview with Miles where he was asked about Al Green and said "Al Green- if that mother***** had one tit I'd marry him!" I'd love to read the entire interview again. Quote
