Dan Gould
I spotted an LP that I missed out on at Ebay last month-went for big bucks-and now I spot the LP at this website: http://www.parallel-schallplatten.de/ Can one of our German friends do a little reconn for me, and let me know things like: What are their record grades? What does VG++ mean? Do they ship overseas? Can I order online (and how do I do that) or do I need to contact them via e-mail? And if worse came to worst, can someone step in as go-between to order the LP and then ship it on to me? Thanks very much! Oh yeah, this is the LP: Earl Washington All-Star Jazz, Workshop Jazz (Washington's mostly forgotten, but he had a group of Basie folks for this date)
J.A.W.
The LP can be ordered on-line. It's a hefty €68 (approximately $78) plus shipping, and payment can be made via PayPal. An e-mail to info@parallel-schallplatten.de might do the trick, but I don't know if they speak English. If not, I'm sure one of the board members living in Germany will be able to help, that'll probably be easier and cheaper than my help would be, as I'm in the Netherlands. Dan Gould
Thanks Hans. Does it indicate if they ship worldwide, or would I definitely need a German member to help? And I am very surprised that they don't seem to have any link to indicate was their grading standards are. And believe it or not, $78 isn't a bad price when you consider that it went for nearly $200 on ebay!
J.A.W.
Dan, They state that they can quote international shipping rates on request, so I'm guessing they do ship to your shores as well. I couldn't find any grading explanation. Edited September 28, 2003 by J.A.W.
Peter A
Dan, this seems to be their grading system (click on "AGB", then on "Standards"): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- nm Platte ungespielt, Cover neuwertig m- Platte selten gespielt, Cover weist minimale Gebrauchsspuren auf vg++ Platte mehrfach gespielt, weist leichte Gebrauchsspuren auf, Cover mit kleineren Gebrauchsspuren vg+ Platte oft gespielt, weist kleinere Haarkratzer auf, die in der Regel nicht hörbar sind, Cover mit Abnutzungen an den Ecken, Knicke, Preisabrisse oder sonstige Einrisse möglich vg Platte weist größere, auch hörbare Kratzer auf, Grundrauschen wahrnehmbar, Cover ist geklebt, hat größere Flecken, Einrisse, kleinere Stücke fehlen, insgesamt deutlich abgenutzt --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- vg++ : record has been played more often, record shows minor wear, cover shows minor wear. Looks like an interesting record! By coincidence I also just found two records on the Workshop label recently: Lefty Edwards (209) and George Bohanon Quartet (207). Good luck! Dan Gould
Thanks Peter, I figured VG++ would be generally acceptable. That Lefty Edwards is a real nice record, and that George Bohanon Bossa Nova LP is currently at $60 on ebay ... Guess I'll have to wait for a response to my e-mail til Monday, aren't all the stores closed on Sunday in Germany?

In most Western European countries most stores are closed on most Sundays Edited September 28, 2003 by J.A.W.
Shrdlu
Dan, you might find this translation website handy http://www.systranbox.com/systran/box You can copy and paste paragraphs into the box and it gives reasonable results. I find that their translations need a bit of fine tuning, but it is a handy tool and it saves a lot of hunting on my keyboard for umlauts, circumflex accents etc.
Dan Gould
Thanks again for the help everyone, as it turned out, they were conversant in English and after a few back and forth e-mails, the LP should be on its way across the pond soon. mikeweil
Dan, that's a very rare bird you caught there! Could you post your impressions, please, especially if and how much of Thad Jones is on this album? Thanks!
