Jazzmoose Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 Cool...we'll be as famous as that guy behind the drummer at that concert they had back in the early seventies where that band played that song...you know the one I mean! Quote
J.A.W. Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 I'm a bit surprised hardly anyone mentions My Aim Is True, Elvis' first album and one of his best in my opinion, with terrific backing by the Attractions. By the way, has anyone ever heard the Japanese mini-LP sleeve versions of the various albums? I was wondering how they compare sonically to the Rykos and Rhinos. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 (edited) Hans, blame that on my worrying that I'll look outdated. My Aim is True is my absolute favorite Costello LP, top to bottom. However, keep in mind that it's one of those albums that changed my musical life drastically. Once I heard Watching the Detectives, my musical tastes changed radically. It was goodbye Mott the Hoople and Black Sabbath, and hello anything from Stiff Records... I'm afraid my favorite Costello period will always be the first three albums. Quality of the music aside, they just meant so much to me at the time. I was no longer listening to my friends' music, or my cousin's music; I was listening to my music. That's a pretty strong plus for any other music to fight! Edited November 1, 2003 by Jazzmoose Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Hans, My Aium is True is indeed quite an album, but it's not the Attractions but rather a band called Clover who later became Heuy Lewis' News. If you want to hear the Attractions play (the shit outta) the material from My Aim get the Live @ the El Mocombo promo/boot (part of the 2 1/2 Years box) or various live boots and bonus tracks... BruceH Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Wasn't My Aim Is True the only early EC album to NOT feature the Attractions? I think the crack backing-band was the Clovers, though I couldn't swear to it. First Attractions/Costello album was This Year's Model, if I'm not mistaken, and the musical contrast with MAIT is interesting. Less guitar licks, but a more intense, aggressive sound that seems to leap off the vinyl. Still, I certainly agree that MAIT is certainly one of EC's finest albums, and may still be his most consistent. Quote
BruceH Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Damn, dana-, beat me to the punch. I THOUGHT it was the Clovers. Funny name for a band that can cook like that. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 No, that's just "Clover" NOT "The Clovers" who were a '50s vocal group who recorded "One Mint Julep" and other R&B hits for Atlantic. Quote
J.A.W. Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 (edited) Oops, my bad, of course it was Clover... By the way, "The Clovers" are my all-time favorite R&B vocal group Their Atlantic material is absolutely wonderful! Edited November 1, 2003 by J.A.W. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Hans, I always wanted to take a thread off on a tangent so I am quite pleased to say that I too love the Clovers. What's not to like, great material and production curtesy of Atlantic, great singing from the group despite the usual personnel changes curtesy of the draft. I think their closest competition would be the 5 Royales who sang in a similar style and were more self contained due to bass singer/guitaris Lowman Pauling's writing skills. Quote

I agree, they were a excellent group with great material and good arrangements. When I still had my vinyl collection I was lucky enough to own both Atlantic LPs, The Clovers and Dance Party, and lots of singles. The UK Sequel label reissued their recordings on 2 CDs, but they are out of print. Rhino / Atlantic's Down in the Alley: The Best of the Clovers with 21 tracks is a great collection, but that one's also out of print. A nice alternative is the 16-track Rhino collection The Very Best of the Clovers. Collectables reissued the LPs as a "2LPs-on-1CD", but I don't know if they left something off. The "5" Royales were also a wonderful group. I recommend the CDs with Apollo material The "5" Royales Sing "The Laundromat Blues" and The "5" Royales Sing "Baby Don't Do It", both on Relic, and the 2CD Rhino collection Monkey Hips and Rice: The "5" Royales Anthology with Apollo, King and Vee Jay (1 song) material. BruceH Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Agreed! I have a very good vinyl compilation of Clovers songs and I believe it's on "Demon," Elvis Costello's re-issue label. In any case, I'm sure it's out of print. Great group, though. The 5 Royales are probably my favorite group of this type. The writing, musicianship, and overall feel of many of their songs puts them in category all their own as far as I'm concerned. God, they were great! A little while back, someone was putting out vinyl re-issues of the 5 Royales albums, with the original covers and all...anyone got those? Quote
Tjazz Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 Just picked up NORTH. I have all of his albums/CDs, but NORTH didn't impress me. (I've even been buying the 2-CD re-issues) Quote
