A Lark Ascending Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 Just joined in the last few minutes. Looking forward to the first JRR since the BBC once again showed how little it valued so many of its licence payers with a non-stop Mozart fortnight. Ridiculous. Quote
BillF Posted January 15, 2011 Author Report Posted January 15, 2011 Agreed! But there was some great jazz today. Highlights for me were Clifford Brown with a Gigi Gryce orchestra, "Brown Skins"; Mark Murphy scatting to "Boplicity" under the title of "Bebop Live" and Joe Lovano's "Central Park West". Quote
kinuta Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 WWOZ New Orleans : Blues With The Midnight Creeper. A great show. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) Jazz Library from BBC Radio 3: Chet Baker Caught the last half. Not a big Baker fan. Sonny Stitt next week! Now on JRR which is shaping up nicely. Enjoyed the Bebop Presservation Society track especially so far. Edit: Really enjoyable programme from start (Bessie Smith) to finish (a thrilling Joe Zawinul track with the WDR Big Band...I blow hot and cold over Zawinul but 'Brown Street' was just wonderful). Yes, Alan Barnes on Sonny Stitt should be interesting. You've reminded me that I missed the beginning of today's show and I have never heard the young Chet with Bird, so must try the i-player for that. I think my favourite from JRR was the Dodo Marmarosa track, but then I'm a bebopper at heart! Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Now playing: Max Roach Quintet, "Effi" (1968) from Members, Don't Git Weary Wasn't that good? I know the tune from Bobby Hutcherson's 'Patterns' which shares Cowell on piano. Enjoyed the Sonny Stitt Jazz Library too. Quote

Too busy this afternoon joining University and Colleges Union members (NATFHE in my day) at the big Manchester anti-cuts rally. Approve, Bev? Quote
