BillF Posted November 15, 2012 Author Report Posted November 15, 2012 Came across this by accident yesterday and heard some great Eckstein, Thornhill and Gillespie tracks. This interpretation of "Composer of the Week" will get the old guard turning in their graves! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nt27k Quote
BillF Posted November 16, 2012 Author Report Posted November 16, 2012 Listening again to "Composer of the Week"'s big band history. In this final programme we heard Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones, John Dankworth, Bob Brookmeyer and Maria Schneider. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted December 15, 2012 Report Posted December 15, 2012 Jazz Record Requests But where's the playlist? Rubbish website! The BBC varies on this - sometimes it's up straight away, sometimes later. Especially annoying on BBC 4's 'Something Understood', a 30 minute religion/philosophy programme made up of someone's thoughts, readings and the most bizarre mixture of music. I'm always hearing something I want to track down but then have to wait a day until the playlist appears. I must admit I don't look at the JRR list until after a track has been played - I like to be surprised. Really enjoying the 'Basra' version of 'Lazy Afternoon' at present. Must play that disc again. A Lark Ascending Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 (edited) Moi aussi (as one of his teachers might have said) 'The Way You Look Tonight' from 1953 First heard it on JRR in 1977 - one of the first proper 'jazz' pieces to catch my ear. Bought it on this bizarre twofer putting two of the college albums together: One of the first pieces where I found myself following the variations of the soloist (Desmond - even then I tended to woolgather once Dave himself started).
