BeBop Posted August 20, 2011 Report Posted August 20, 2011 Then again, I suppose y'all paid (taxes) for it... The BBC is largely paid for through the television licence fee which costs about $230 a year. It's technically possible to escape the fee by not owning a television set and just listening to radio, though I don't know anyone in this position! Interesting! If I moved to the UK, I could be this "freeloading" person! I haven't watched television or a movie or video (VHS, DVD, BluRay) since 1978. Telly-free. Thanks for the enlightenment, BillF Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 20, 2011 Report Posted August 20, 2011 Decided Oliver Nelson wasn't really for me - love 'Stolen Moments' but most of the rest had too much of that brassy, post-40s big band sound for my taste. However, I really enjoyed the Basie track towards the end - 'Afrique'. Didn't sound like Basie at all! Quote
sidewinder Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 However, I really enjoyed the Basie track towards the end - 'Afrique'. Didn't sound like Basie at all! That album (for Flying Dutchman) is the strangest thing Basie ever recorded (along with the James Bond album for United Artists). 'Afrique' even includes some Albert Ayler tunes ! Quote
BillF Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Spoilt for choice this evening! Jazz Library, Jazz Record Requests and WKCR's Pres and Bird marathon. Going for the last at the moment. Quote
BillF Posted August 28, 2011 Author Report Posted August 28, 2011 Now dropping in for the fifth time to WKCR's Pres and Bird 72-hour marathon. Lovely! Quote

BillF Posted September 10, 2011 Author Report Posted September 10, 2011 me too Great show! Still with BBC for Jazz Record Requests? Loved NYJO playing Mark Nightingale's "Fleet" (where he lives). Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Really enjoyed the Sonny Rollins at the end. Quote
fasstrack Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 WKCR FM is my favorite, with a gulf between it and any pretender IMO. But today I broke down and pledged $50, a lot for a broke-ass like myself, to WBGO, Newark. B/c Rhonda Hamilton knows her stuff. The morning guy, Gary Walker, ain't bad either. And just because. Maybe it's that Phill schaap isn't on BGO. I mean we have to accept our small victories. Quote

BillF Posted September 17, 2011 Author Report Posted September 17, 2011 Jazz Record Requests from BBC Radio 3 Now playing: Woody Herman, "Opus de Funk" from Woody's Winners That Kathy Stobart track with Lyttelton's band was a gas! I see the BBC old guard have been at work again, banishing Jazz Library with Priestley on Mulligan to everybody's favourite hour of midnight to 1 a.m! If this goes on I might just as well listen to live evening radio from the U.S! Quote

If this goes on I might just as well listen to live evening radio from the U.S! I suspect that's the plan. 'Well, we put jazz on but no-one listens. So we have to pull it.' Nice JRR again. Simple concept but always has at least one surprise. I really liked the Benny Carter 'My One and Only Love'. Quote
JohnS Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 Just listened to Jazz Library. Brian Priestley on Mulligan, splendid. Quote

Shame about the truncated audio clips on the podcast. But even then that version of I Loves You Porgy is an absolute killer, isn't it. Quote

Shame about the truncated audio clips on the podcast. Yes, I noticed those. I take it the programme was prerecorded at a civilised hour, unlike the time the Beeb expects jazzers without computers to be up at! Quote
