AllenLowe Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 "how did this thread turn into an "Allen Lowe" thread? No disrespect, but you've turned a discussion about Lou Donaldson's Hot Dog, an album and artist you don't dig,... into an ongoing conversation with yourself about yourself." it's my favorite subject - also, helps me forget about Hot Dog which I listened to once and which has led to a recurring nightmare: I'm being chased by several white nuns with Afros carrying copies of Ann Coulter's latest book and an autographed copy of the album Hot Dog, and they are screaming: "one of Gould's", "one of Gould's" over and over - and than one of the nun's pulls out a Star of David and says: "Now I am married to Berigan. Now I am married to Berigan." I have no idea what this dream means, but I wish it would stop as I'm tired of wetting my bed in fear - Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 In these discographies would it show if there were other unissued completed takes? Looks like the track Alligator Boogaloo was a second attempt. Wonder if the first take was a complete take? Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Thanks for the article Jim.... Sophisticated Lou is a w/strings album...Stella, ect... so yeah, I guess the 'critic' dug it more than the 'trivial' funk of Everything I Play Is Funky. Typical of the era and critical establishment in general. Everything I Play is a GREAT LP. Quote
JSngry Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 FWIW, the "critic" (Michael Bourne) was at the time somewhere in his 20s and was very much a fan of jazz-rock, funk-jazz, etc., as well as those musics without the "-jazz" appendage. No stuffy middle-aged "jazz purist" was he, at least not then. Quote
