EKE BBB Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 Anybody read this Basie autobiography (as told to Albert Murray) published by Da Capo Press? Just bought it, and I´m beginning it.... it looks very, very interesting! Quote
jazzbo Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 It's quite an interesting read. Not the definitive book about this band (or "any of these bands" really) but you're going to get a lot of pleasure out of it. Quote
Simon Weil Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 I bought it years and years ago and could never get through it. This was before I knew who Albert Murray was. I tend to feel Murray and his acolytes "disappear the pain".... There isn't enough pain in the book (even implied). IMHO. Simon Weil Quote
brownie Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 Got the Albert Murray book when it came out and was also disappointed with it. There was not much to learn and the book made Basie appear a bit complacent. The best Basie book so far is the bio-discography by Chris Sheridan. That one is an essential reading. One of the best book on jazz ever. Quote
