paul secor Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Yet there were sobering aspects to Chan's arrival here, as well. In San Francisco, Chan had been praised for the "intense" and "rhapsodic" quality of his playing, observed the San Francisco Bay Guardian, as well as the size of his sound. But then Chan heard the likes of Seals, Fred Anderson, Von Freeman and other leather-lunged Chicago tenor men. "I thought I had a big sound," says Chan. "Then I found out what a big sound was." Quote
papsrus Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Trying to find some sound samples. He has an album titled "In Chicago" -- quartet. Anyone familiar with it? Quote

Yeah, I think it's a great record, but I haven't listened to it in ages. Ameen Muhammed's last recording if I'm correct, and Tatsu Aoki and Chad Taylor are a great rhythm section. His other studio disc on AIR isn't worth picking up, but I've really enjoyed the In Chicago record. Quote
jimi089 Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 http://home.earthlink.net/~jfchan/ Apparently that hasn't been updated since he moved to Chicago. Quote

Yeah I hit that site first and it seemed a little stale. Got 404 Not Found on the samples. I'll scrounge around some more, try to reach him email, thanks. Quote
jimi089 Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 papsrus, if you have any difficulty getting in touch let me know. I see Jeff regularly. Quote

I'll shoot him an email with the address alocispepraluger102 provided and see what happens. The Chicago scene is an area of interest. Sounds like it was a good move. Thanks again. Quote
papsrus Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 I contacted Jeff Chan via email and he kindly wrote back directing me to sound samples at allmusic. Unfortunately, either the format doesn't like Macs or there's something I'm doing wrong. Won't play. I feel pretty good about ordering "In Chicago" blind (or deaf, I guess) so I'll probably go ahead and snag that one shortly. Thanks for the help gents. Quote
