RogerF Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 (edited) Check out the Fledg'ling Records link here to see the full details of this long-overdue reissue from Chris McGregor 'Very Urgent' due out on 14 April. http://www.thebeesknees.com/?p=209#more-209 As I remember it is really quite free but I don't remember it that well. I think I bought it and then got rid of it along with Oliv (SME) because I didn't understand what was going on then - I was not quite into jazz then, this being around 1969/1970. I shall definitely be buying it on CD this time though! Edited February 26, 2008 by RogerF Quote
sidewinder Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 That's good news - I want to check this one out. I see that the second RCA Neon album 'Brotherhood' is out now on CD too. Quote

Recorded 1971. Quote
king ubu Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 Aw, shit, lots of catching up for me there... still need all of those, also the live sets, Bremen to Bridgewater and the other one, also the Harry Miller Isipingo live set - got that as boot, but I feel like I have to replace that with the real thing, same for the recent 1971 BoB show... it's so good to see some labels actually releasing this that they shall have my full support! (Well, as soon as the bank account permits, anyway... first I'll have to grab the Hodges Mosaic and maybe the Prima/Manone, too...) Quote
JohnS Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 Off thread a little I know but maybe of interest. I saw the BoB at Ronnie Scott's Old Place the dummer on that evening was Barry Altschul! Quote
medjuck Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 I've got a Polydor cd of "Very Urgent" I picked up second hand a couple of years ago. Didn't know it was rare. The cover looks the same except that t it has the Ploydor logo on the orange sphere in the upper right hand corner. Just noticed that Joe Bpyd produced it. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 Off thread a little I know but maybe of interest. I saw the BoB at Ronnie Scott's Old Place the dummer on that evening was Barry Altschul! Yeah, he mentioned to me that he'd worked with them in later years. I really look forward to the Very Urgent coming out on disc. I've been looking for a vinyl copy for the better part of a decade... Quote
sidewinder Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 I really look forward to the Very Urgent coming out on disc. I've been looking for a vinyl copy for the better part of a decade... Amazing how elusive that one is. Only ever saw one copy come up - and that had the cover bent ! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 Yeah, I was offered one once that had a deep gouge in the vinyl (for $125 - fine if it were mint) - had to pass! Quote

clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 Got confirmation that a review copy will be on its way shortly, so I'll keep y'all posted on sound/presentation. Quote
Chalupa Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 When I saw the title of this thread I thought someone was going to FINALLY release "Up To Earth" which, AFAIK has never been released officially. "Very Urgent" while rare, isn't "lost" just OOP. 3 or 4 copies have sold on Ebay in the past year. Still thanks for the news. Pretty nifty that VU and the Ogun Blue Notes box set will released w/ in weeks of each other this Spring. Quote

Alexander Hawkins Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 This one is great...very very free-jazzy - relatively low on the conspicuous SA-inflection. Moholo and McGregor are absolutely ferocious throughout! Have only heard a friend's vinyl copy, so looking forward to a CD. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 ?????? http://www1.gemm.com/item/MCGREGOR-c-CHRIS...)/GML829531757/ Mole put it out as a bootleg, along with the Surman album that became Way Back When. They were available some years ago at about $100 a pop. Quote

They were available some years ago at about $100 a pop. What the heck is '+/- 10 copies'? Does that mean these are anti-matter versions? Can't say I ever recall the guys at Mole shiftily handing over packages from under the counter in brown paper bags. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I remember they were available through online lists, at least. A friend of mine bought both of them. The McGregor is good! Quote
Chalupa Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 (edited) So has anyone found a cheaper price than $16.99* from Da Bastids??? Edit: * = plus $3.90 for shipping Edited April 8, 2008 by J.H. Deeley Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I'd buy it from DG - they're usually pretty good on getting the UK stuff cheap. Those Fledg'ling discs are usually $18.99 in Austin. Quote

Chalupa Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 (edited) Got my copy today(finally!) for $17.99. Man, this is better than I remember it. In fact it might be my favorite recording by the Blue Notes/BoB. In the liner notes they give a plug for the upcoming Blue Notes box on Ogun. This will definitely hold me over until it gets released. Chalupa Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 Whoa! I just saw this on the Fledg'ling site...... Later this year we hope to release two previously unreleased albums by Chris McGregor from 1969. Watch this space. :excited: :excited: Quote
sidewinder Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 There's a load of information on this from Roger F. posted on AAJ I think. Quote
Chalupa Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 AAJ?? Oh the other board. Well I just got a reply to an email query that I sent last night. Fledg'ling is planning to release 'Up To Earth' in July and 'Our Prayer' in October. Quote
