Guest bluenote82 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 What does everybody think of Marian McPartland's work? I think she's fantastic and has alot of heart. I've really been digging her lately. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 (edited) I've been a fan of hers since the early 1970s. One of the most memorable concert performances was a duo piano engagement with Teddy Wilson in Vermont; this was at one of those beautiful old opera houses with fine acoustics, I think that it was the one in Randolph, although hundreds of concerts in nearly as many venues tend to blend together sometimes in the ol' memory banks. Piano Jazz has become an institution for good reason. I've always been somewhat amazed at how she can successfully (well, usually!) interact with such a stylistically diverse batch of musicians. Case(s) in point: two of my personal favorite shows are the Bill Evans and the Cecil Taylor. Back in the 1990s when I was Music Director at Mountain-Lake Public Radio in Plattsburgh, NY I was honored to "bookend" her show with mine every Saturday night and it was never less than enjoyable. She's a bonafide sweetheart too; the personality that comes across on the air is real. And here's a link to an old thread: Marian McPartland Edited February 20, 2008 by Bill Barton Quote
Christiern Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 In the mid-Sixties, when I offered Marian her own radio show, she had to be convinced that she could do it. The weekly show went very well...the rest is history. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Please don't tell us you gave Ben Sidran his start in radio too, Chris... I for one salute you for talking Marian into the idea! Quote
Guest bluenote82 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 (edited) Has anyone heard here great recording called "Silent Pool"? It's great! All the orchestrations/arrangements are by Alan Broadbent (who's a great pianist as well). Edited February 21, 2008 by bluenote82 Quote
Ken Dryden Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Marian McPartland just performed with strings in Columbia, South Carolina, a suite dedicated to Rachel Carson. She's got a new release, Twilight World, due out next month. I've already played the advance several times. I do wish the folks at Concord would get busy issuing more of her Piano Jazz programs on CD, and not just the rock/pop guests... Quote

I would work very hard to keep Ben Sidran off the air. Once gave his book, "Black Talk" a very bad review in Saturday Review. He wrote me an angry letter that said a lot about him--and it wasn't good. Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 few people know this, but Chris also gave Phil Schaap his start - Quote

Obviously some of the powers-that-be along the beltway in public radio central had somewhat less refined taste than you do. few people know this, but Chris also gave Phil Schaap his start - Wrong. Guest Bill Barton Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 ...I do wish the folks at Concord would get busy issuing more of her Piano Jazz programs on CD, and not just the rock/pop guests... So true! There are dozens (hundreds?) of fine shows in those archives. Quote
Guest bluenote82 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 (edited) She did one with my hero, Bill Frisell, last year, and I really liked it alot. Marian is a kind lady and she's also just one hell of a pianist...damn. Edited February 21, 2008 by bluenote82 Quote
Christiern Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Marian is a sweetheart. The only artist who called me to agree with a less than favorable review I gave to one of her albums. That, however, is not why she is a sweetheart, she just happens to be a very nice, very talented lady. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 I recall that her Strayhorn album on Concord with Jerry Dodgion, Steve LaSpina, and Joey Baron is very good: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/...y+Strayhorn.htm Quote

All the orchestrations/arrangements are by Alan Broadbent (who's a great pianist as well). I haven't heard Silent Pool, bluenote82, but it probably should be on my "short list" of must-hears. Alan Broadbent is a marvelous arranger. There are maybe five or six jazz "with strings" albums - tops - that reach me. This sounds like a candidate for a spot on that list. Any other reactions to this album? Quote

Have you ever heard the Wallace Roney album "Misterios." What an amazing album. Geri Allen on piano and string arrangements by Gil Goldstein. It's a remarkably good album.
