Have they ever been reissued, on CD or vinyl? Does anyone know the extent of Weatherford's recording activity in India? Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 somewhere I have an LP with Weatherford piano solos, and they may be the things that are on the 78s - interesting stuff, the work of a pianist who, once ahead of his time, was now a little behind the times - but still a terrific musician (and an early influence on Earl Hines) - I also think that my Devilin Tune set has one of these - will have to take a look later in the week - Quote

Ted O'Reilly Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 Is the as/cl player "Paul Gonsalves" noted in the Calcutta sessions post-c. May 1943 the same Paul Gonsalves of later Basie/Ellington fame? (Lord discography indicates it is). I know he did military service in WW2 -- was he in India, doing some playing on the side? And does anyone know if Paul was related to the bassist on these sessions, Tony Gonsalves? Quote
jazztrain Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 Apparently not the same Paul Gonsalves according to information in: Jazz in India: Perspectives on Historical Development and Musical Acculturation Warren R. Pinckney, Jr. Asian Music, Vol. 21, No. 1 (Autumn, 1989 - Winter, 1990), pp. 35-77 That source states: "Several other Goan musicians, including bassist Tony Gonsalves and saxophonists Paul Gonsalves (not the same Paul Gonsalves who joined Duke Ellington's band in 1951) and Rudy Cottton, recorded with Indian swing bands in the 1930s and 1940s." Idiom59 Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 (edited) You are indeed correct Ted. Paul Gonsalves did serve in India during WW2 and was on the sessions in question.A friend of mine, who has recently died, told me that while he (my friend) was serving in Calcutta with the RAF Paul would sit in with the Weatherford band at the hotel gig they had. Years later when Ellington came to Europe my friend managed to speak to Paul and reminded him of his Indian service, which Paul, apparently, recalled with great affection. Rooster_Ties Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 Chuck Nessa said: Here is the deal on Weatherford: Just wanted to say a big thanks to Chuck for all the technical info he provides around here (like above). I know he's not the only one (so ALL of you who do, also deserve such thanks), but I especially wanted to say that for whatever few times Chuck says "did you ever think of buying your own discography??" -- WAY more often than not, Chuck comes through with the info, with nary a sour word. Thanks Chuck! I think probably a LOT of us around here really appreciate it. Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 actually, he made up all that stuff - Quote
