HolyStitt Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Time for me to order up the Johnny Hodges but I am on the fence with the Prima/Manone set. Does anyone have any feedback on it? It seems to have quite a few sessions with Pee Wee Russell. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 I really like it. But then I'm a fan of early jazz and of the New Orleans style of the twenties and thirties and I would! Sound is very good. Nice booklet too. Prima has said something like "Pee Wee Russell was the most fascinating musical mind I knew." There's good Pee Wee here. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 (edited) Damn. I hope that Prima stays in 'Running Low' for a month or so. If Jazzbo likes it then it's likely to be on my list.. Edited February 14, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
jazzbo Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 I found the quote about Pee Wee, told by Prima to Arnold Shaw: “He had the most fabulous musical mind I have known. He never looked at a note. But the second time I played a lick, he’d play along with me in harmony. The guy seemed to read my mind. I never ran into anyone that had that much talent.” Quote
HolyStitt Posted February 14, 2008 Author Report Posted February 14, 2008 I broke down and ordered both with the Onzy Matthews Mosaic Select, Lou Rawls Black and Blue/Tobacco Road, the Mulligan Concert Band set I had on hold, and the last copy of the Elmer Snowden Harlem Banjo CD. I already have the Young/Basie set on order (and debate on adding the Hampton when it is ready to ship!), so it looks like I am not going to be buying any music, unless more sets I do not have move over to the endangered list, for a few months. street singer Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Thanks for the heads-up on this. I ordered the Hodges -- the only one of the three CD sets in the Running Low/Last Chance that I absolutely don't want to miss out on. I've been putting that one off for long enough... Can't wait to finally hear it! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 The current Johnny Hodges set is one of my favorite Mosaic boxes ever. It was great to be able to recommend it whenever anyone asked for a quick rec. Now what will I say? Quote
Tom 1960 Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Shoot! I've also been interested in the Hodges set but opted for the Nelson set instead. I really enjoy his small group sessions with Ellington. (Side By Side and Back To Back.) What to do? Quote

In my opinion the Hoges set is worth two Nelsons! Quote
street singer Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 I just sent off an email to our friends at Mosaic requesting that a copy of the Venuti/Lang be added to my order. After listening to the sound samples, I was too intrigued to let this one pass me by. If the Prima/Manone is still available next month, I'll probably pick it up at that time... The Hodges, though, was an absolute, unquestionable, without-a-doubt MUST BUY. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 A question to you knowledgable folks who follow this sort of thing. If the past is any sort of indication, how long is the time lapse between "Running Low" and "Last Chance"? If I can manage to sit this out say perhaps two months it would make things a hell of alot easier. Quote
Ron S Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 It really varies quite a bit. If you call Mosaic, they may be able to give you better guidance on this particular set (based on how many are left, etc.) Quote
jazzbo Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Mosaic is likely to be able to provide you with a good educated "guess". . . . In this case I think you'd be safe, that would be MY guess, but it's not as informed as one Mosaic would provide. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Thanks for the help guys. I'll give Mosaic a call in the next few days. Quote
HolyStitt Posted February 14, 2008 Author Report Posted February 14, 2008 If I can manage to sit this out say perhaps two months it would make things a hell of alot easier. I think they sometimes allow you to hold sets as well. It is something to think about if it moves to the Last Chance before two months are up. Quote
king ubu Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 Ouch, this is hard... I was actually starting to consider buying the Venuti/Lang if it was still around, but now it's only #3 of these again and hence must be skipped... the Hodges is a no-brainer, and also the Prima/Manone would interest me some... (just last night I played some of the first Classic of Manone's). Hm, I assume I'll only be able to afford the Hodges, in the end, and I have to wait a couple of weeks before I can order... hope it doesn't go *that* fast! Quote
sidewinder Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 My Venuti/Lang set is over at the post office awaiting payment of Her Majesty's Taxes . Once I've collected it, I'll post a few thoughts. I think I'll go for the Prima/Manone, even if it needs a request to Mosaic to hold one back. The Hodges, yes, is a 'no brainer'. Quote

MagicAlex61 Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 Please don't miss the Hodges set! You will be sorry later. One of the best sets I ever bought (twice actually). I gave my first set to a friend and then realized this past December how much I missed it and reordered. :tup :tup Quote
Harold_Z Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 My two cents before this thread fades - don't miss either the Johnny Hodges or the Wingy/Prima if you have any inclination towards small group swing. Lon's comments are right on (as usual) . You can't EVER get enough Johnny Hodges and the Wingy/Prima moves increasingly from it's 20s start into very good small group swing with guys like Pee Wee and Chu Berry. Quote
papsrus Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 The Hodges was near the top of my list as well. I was actually set to order it a month or two ago but was swayed over the the Crusaders box (no regrets there!). So thanks for the heads-up. My order's in now. Quote

woofy Posted February 16, 2008 Report Posted February 16, 2008 Thanks for the heads up, my Hodges set is on the way. Quote
