BillF Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 (edited) From BBC Radio 4's schedule for today: 1:30-2p.m. The Jazz Baroness. The story of Pannonica Rothschild who became a leading sponsor of bebop stars such as Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. Edited February 12, 2008 by BillF Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Thanks! Will switch over now. Quote
JohnS Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Thanks for the reminder Bill, forgot all about it. Thank goodness for listen again. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 (edited) Sorry I missed this--she just came up in conversation last week with my friend who writes our early-music show, Harmonia. Does the BBC archive, at least temporarily? EDIT: just noticed JohnS's "listen again" reference--I assume that means either archiving or re-airing. Guess I should just go to the site and take a gander, eh? Edited February 12, 2008 by ghost of miles Quote
sidewinder Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 (edited) Heard this at lunchtime in the car whilst in transit (YES !!). A fabulous tribute to this remarkable lady by what sounds to be her neice (or great neice?) from the Rothschild family. Even mentions the 'rumour' of the Bird accidental killing by Blakey ! Best recollection - the first time she heard bebop apparently (Gillespie) was on the radio when flying a Lancaster bomber over North Africa during WW2 (presumably a ferry mission for the Free French). sidewinder Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Does the BBC archive, at least temporarily? David - It's available on 'Listen Again' up to 7 days from broadcast. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Yeah, I'm listening now. Wow--where'd they get that tape of Monk introducing "Pannonica"? BBC Radio 4--look under "Tuesday Pick of the Day." Quote
sidewinder Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Amazing that she was still out and about at the clubs until 1988 diggin' the live jazz. There should be a plaque for her in Manhattan for services rendered ! Quote
sidewinder Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 And link to previous thread.. Nica Quote
Christiern Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Great program--thanks! Had the experience of meeting Nica a few time--extraordinary woman, great silver flask! Got a kick out of Monk falling asleep in the kitchen--that's exactly what he did when Jules Colomby and I put together a concert at the Village Gate. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Great show -- choked me up unexpectedly a couple of times e.g. Monk's verbal intro to "Pannonica," followed by the piece. One error: It's said that Nica's New Jersey apartment was formerly that of Josef von Sternberg, famous film director and husband of Marlene Dietrich. Von Sternberg and Dietrich were not husband and wife. Quote
