JSngry
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ro/5511176.html I heard them often in the early 1970s at various stage band festivals. They were so far ahead of anybody else in both ability and poise that the notion of "competing" was absurd. Those guys were in a class of their own. These days, when too many adults have a hard time believing in anything other than perpetual mediocrity, and too many kids have a difficult time aspiring to even that, it's inspirational like a big dog to think back not THAT far ago when people, young and old alike, had dreams and the fire to make them happen. Conrad Johnson was no doubt a blessing to those who knew him, as well as for those of us who merely witnessed the fruits of his and his students' labors. RIP, and thank you, sir. Free For All
I saw him and his bands perform many times at various jazz festivals when I was living in Austin in the 80s. Those bands were swinging hard and played with a ton of energy and spirit. RIP
Noj
I dig the Kashmere Stage Band, I've got one of their LPs and several loose tracks on compilations. Definitely a funky ensemble. RIP, Conrad Johnson.
Michael Weiss
The Captain Walter Dyett of his day. My school competed with Kashmere in the mid 70s in Brownwood, TX. A great opportunity to hear what a great HS band can sound like.
Dave Garrett
Just found out about the KSB reunion concerts toward the end of last week, and thought about going but couldn't swing the $125 ticket price (despite it being for a worthy cause). The afternoon following the second concert, news of his passing had started to spread. Will be spinning the CD in remembrance.
