What sort of coverage does jazz get from television in your area? and what a great evening of viewing it was. I recorded the lot ! So many highlights - Oscar and Ella at their greatest, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass and the wonderful Mr Ed Thigpen. That 'Jazz 625' was a real discovery (Peterson/Brown/Thigpen, 1964). Quote
sidewinder Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 The program on Humph was good too. That man is a national institution - and still touring too (I see he has gigs coming up soon, must go and see). Fond memories of seeing that 1970s band with Bruce Turner, Kathy Stobart, Mike Pyne and Dave Green. Turner, in particular, was a very under-rated iconoclast of the clarinet and alto. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Excellent Bruce Turner video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXJ-Ea5ePxs I'm very fond of his autobiography "Hot Air, Cool Music." Quote
sidewinder Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Wow - thanks for that. To my mind, Turner was the 'mainstream' musician par excellence. Looked comfortable in both idioms. Have his early 60s Philips LP somewhere, will dig it out. Also interesting to see Colin Bates on piano - another stalwart of mainstream British jazz. Quote

I watched the four Peterson programmes last night. Great stuff. I especially enjoyed the 625 programme too. The conversation with Andre Previn was well worth staying up. Highly recommended programmes for those of you who recorded them. Quote
papsrus Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 What sort of coverage does jazz get from television in your area? None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. BETJ has some programing (or used to ... I haven't watched in a while) that focused on jazz legends. But I can get that on demand from YouTube now, so .... Beyond that, nothing. Quote
BillF Posted February 8, 2008 Author Report Posted February 8, 2008 Once again BBC 4 delivers the goods! This evening , from 8 to 8:30, it was Joe Lovano as Artist in Residence at the Brecon Jazz Festival. We saw excerpts from an interview , a masterclass and a concert performance. Trouble is, I could have watched three hours of this stuff! Anyone else see this? Quote
sidewinder Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 Missed it, I'm afraid. Hopefully they will repeat it. Quote

sidewinder Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 I heard a rumour that BBC4 was going to run a season of vintage Jazz 625's and other gems but can't substantiate it, I'm afraid. Anyone know anything on this? Quote

Anyone know anything on this? All I've heard is that the current season of Brecon programmes, of which we've now had two, will run to four in all. No mention of Jazz 625. Mind you, the impact of a Jazz 625 series rerun wouldn't be what it might once have been, now that so much of it is on YouTube, albeit chopped into ten minute chunks! Quote
jlhoots Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Nice thread. Nice info. Be careful around here though. The jazz police will be around soon to let you know how useless Lovano & O.P. are / were. Quote

BillF Posted February 9, 2008 Author Report Posted February 9, 2008 BBC 4's advertised programme for Friday 15 at 8:30-9 p.m. is "Brecon Jazz Festival 2007: Women in Jazz". Should I post this under "Women of Organissimo: Where Are You?"? Quote
sidewinder Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 (edited) As for the Lovano, looks like it is available for download and viewing at leisure via BBC I-Player. Alas, the interesting looking Scott Walker documentary produced by Bowie is view only and not downloadable into the I-Player library. So available for 6 days if there's anyone who missed it (ie. me). Except Setanta and those minor Sky Sports channels, which I think are pay per view. Quote
