T.D. Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Just got a Daedalus Books and Music (remainder outlet, www.daedalusbooks.com) catalog yesterday. They have a bunch of Storyville releases for $5.98 and $6.98. I'm tapped out due to Concord, but some of the titles seem pretty attractive. Daedalus has a fixed $5.98 shipping cost, which is good for bigger orders. [Disclaimer: I have no relationship with Daedalus, but have placed a number of orders and received good service.] Quote
kh1958 Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 I've noticed a few Storyville titles as cutouts at Half Price Books recently. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 My goodness, they have 65 Storyville titles as cut-outs. (No Ellingtons, though). Quote

Patrick Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 [naively asked in complete ignorance] is Storyville a legit label??? I have also had good experiences with Daedalus, though I haven't purchased anything there in a very long time. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Don't forget to check out Jazz Unlimited and Nostalgia Arts as well. The "Midnight at V-Disk" is really good, as well as others. . . . I like that Whiteman. Quote

ghost of miles Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Thanks for hipping us to this sale--gave me a chance to finally pick up the Marsh-Konitzs and grab a few other titles of interest: Warne Marsh & Lee Konitz Quintet, Live At The Montmartre Club Jazz Exchange Warne Marsh & Lee Konitz Quintet, Live at the Montmartre Club, Jazz Exchange VA, The Wax Label Sessions Howard McGhee & Teddy Edwards, Wise In Time Johnny Griffin & Art Taylor, In Copenhagen VA, The Jubilee Shows Nos. 96 & 71 Kenny Drew Trio, At the Brewhouse VA, The Continental Sessions, Vol. 3 Dorothy Donegan, Dorothy Donegan Trio ...that live 2-CD Goodman set is very good (don't mind the terrible liners), as are the Marsh-Mitchell Big Two titles. RDK Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Not sure what this means beyond the obvious "we're coming to the end of the CD era," but a number of Storyville discs showed up on emusic a couple of weeks ago. Quote
bertrand Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 I was at the store in Columbia, MD recently and hesitated on the Tubby Hayes but ultimately did not get it. How is this? Bertrand. Quote

Patrick Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 kh, thanks for the heads up and the link to the prior thread. GOM, thanks for the rec on the Goodman twofer. I was initially a bit hesitant given the Yanow/AMG commentary (I know, I know...), but included it in my order. I placed an order for 11 Storyville titles, the Roy Haynes Dreyfus side, and an architecture book. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Those Wax and Continental Label cds are very good. I paid a lot more for mine years ago! Friday night I put in an order that included the Hackett Dr. Jazz, the two Condon Dr. Jazz, the Benny Goodman Swing Sessions and the Mildred Bailey on Nostalgia Arts. Quote
king ubu Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 I sent in an order, too - but I forgot to enter my email to my account info, so I just hope the order will actually ship... it included the Wax and the two Continental discs, the Edwards/McGhee, the Jubilee Jams (I have the Prez portions), the Griffin/Taylor, and one or two more I can't remember (sent it in yesterday, so... and got no confirmation mailed... as I didn't enter my email...) Quote
king ubu Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Oh, and I have Continental Vol. 2, and that one is stellar! Here's hope Vols. 1 & 3 are similarly good! Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Bertrand, The Tubby Hayes is one of the blandest live dates I have ever heard. You don't need it. I went to Daedalus after the New Year and picked up the Warne Marsh cds and the Louis Jordan Transcription discs. Good stuff! Quote
king ubu Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 hah, the Jordan Transcriptions I also ordered! Quote
David Gitin Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Thanks, T.D. and the rest of you for the tip! I've added to my Warne Marsh collection (and Illinois Jacquet, Al Grey-Jimmy Forrest, Howard McGhee-Teddy Edwards). Quote
Free For All Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I just got an email that my order has shipped. That was fast! Quote
JSngry Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Those Storyville Warne sides are essential, all of 'em. Carpe diem y'all. Quote
