CD Universe shows these have a street date of Feb. 1. However, it's unclear if these are repackagings of the 1994 CD reissues (purple border cover art) of these titles or if they are more recent remasterings with upgraded sonics and restored artwork. Anyone know? The record label is "Sbme Special MKTS," so I'm not quite sure what these are. Both are selling for a mere $5.59 on CD Universe!

My guess is that these may be remasterings that won't be available in stores. Stores always get retail product with a Tuesday release date. However, Feb. 1 is a Friday--suggesting the new Sony label may be CDs available for Internet purchase only, thereby bypassing brick and mortar retailers for lesser demand titles?

I would doubt that these are "internet only releases."

As the previous "Big Band" was two cds, there is something to the idea that these may be new versions. . . .

Also included, and perhaps more exciting actually, are "Monk" and "It's Monk Time." They also feature a five disc set reissuing five titlse in mini lp sleeves (more expensive).

Who can tell us about these?

But both "Monk" and "Monk's Time" already were reissued again... the other two are, I think, the only Columbias that weren't re-done yet, and I'd love to get them in newly done versions (I don't have them at all yet, kept waiting/hoping... love those reissued Columbia Sony/Legacy Monk discs a lot!)

Flurin, you're right, I totally blanked out that those two were reissued by US Columbia a half a decade ago. I clearly need to go back to the Columbia years soon and listen to these discs~!

It's good news about Big Band and Quartet, but . . . why not the entire two cds?

Lon: the 5 cd set is a cheap reissue from Somy/BMG Europe. The mini LP's look nice but are not like the Japanese ones we're accustomed to. Nothing about the remastering but since the have the bonus material from the latest cd versions I suspect these to be the latest remasterings. Very good value in Europe.

Thanks Reiner. Wasn't interested in that one.

1) If they are reissuing the Big Band/Quartet with LESS tracks, they are morons. But perhaps I misunderstood.

The original LP had most of the bass and drums solos edited out and only four tracks - the two CD reissues had the complete concert and all tracks restored to full length - anything else would suck! There once was a French CBS CD of the old LP - forgettable.

2) Isn't Monk's Blues supposed to suck?

Oliver Nelson was not the perfect choice for arranging Monk's compositions ...

Bertrand.

I borrowed Monk's Blues from a friend recently and frankly didn't get much enjoyment from it. I remember asking for a few comments on this release and pretty much people were negative.

I'm anticipating that someday we will get an upgraded Big Band & Quartet in Concert. This is one of Monk's best Columbia albums.

The 1994 CD remaster is not bad, but contains some shortcomings:

--Applause from a previous set was crossfaded on top of "Darkness on the Delta." I would prefer to hear this great piano intro start "dry" as it occured without applause from an earlier set marring it. It appears dry on the 3 CD Columbia "best of set" that came out circa 2002.

--Also the great album cover was retooled and also dropped in a hideous purple border.

I agree that "Monk's Blues" is a lesser effort, but the "Blue Monk" outtake is very nice.

BTW, there are tons of Sony titles that were scheduled for the Feb. 1 reissue batch, including some Dave Brubeck titles such as "Jazz Impressions of New York." Check out CD Universe. Once you view a CD title, then click on the label: Sbme Special MKTS. It will take you to page that compiles all of these new Sony budget releases. It's not yet clear if these are just the same old early 1990s masterings with purple border cover art--or if we are getting new remasters. Given how cheap these are, it would tend to suggest the former? Anyone know for sure?

you guys really think they'd remaster monk and issue it for $5.99? it's pretty obvious to me that sony is putting out some of monk's music for the budget crowd. these are the cds you see in large bins at walmart, fye, at convenience stores, etc. he'll be sitting there right next to mariah carey's mtv unplugged, leslie west's mountain, and tammy wynette's stand by your man. these are all titles on this budget label. of course, he'll also get to share space with al dimeola, ahmad jamal, and even wynton! here's a link to a list of these "jazz bargains": sony special market releases

p.s. and don't be surprised if some of these cds have tracks missing. think about the market they're targeting. these ain't intended for us!

Nothing among those Special Market Releases that hasn't been available before.

Mosaic singles are the most likely candidate for serious reissues from the Columbia vaults.

But what makes me skeptical re the Monk Big Band disc is that all of these are single discs, the complete Monk concert doesn't fit on one, and the original LP replication CD was a French reissue - something doesn't fit here.

Let's wait 'n' see ...

Oh, man I want to get a definitive edition of Big Band & Quartet! Why can't they just finish their great run of Monk reissues and do that one, finally? (And the Nelson one, too - I've never even heard it and being a big Monk fan I'd definitely buy a new reissue, while I'm not sure I want to look for the old one...)

From the liner notes booklet (dated April 2012):

"1962-1967 ... in addition to his studio work with his quartet, made several live recordings on club and concert settings during this period. Those live performances will comprise a projected future Monk collection in Columbia/Legacy's Complete Albums series."

Could this mean the inclusion of a more complete Complete It Club like the Mosaic LP set? :)

Is the Mosaic more complete than the Legacy 2CD set?

Not sure I'm in the market for any Monk box unless it contains substantial new stuff (which I doubt to exist ... that is unless they unearth some treasures ... but all those albums boxes usually are on the rather cheap side, so why would they go stretches, probably the would even bother to remaster "Big Band and Quartet in Concert").

Yes, but they are all "Epistrophy (Theme)" . . . . five of them.

I'd buy a set, I"m a sucker for these collections, all in one compact place. And I'd LOVE a remastered and expanded "Big Band and Quartet."

It's a bit more complete. See thread.

According to post #8 from thread there is live stuff that has yet to see the light of day (at all or in remastered form). Both the Woody Shaw and Mahavishnu boxes in this series contained an extra disc with new live material. The Mahavishnu also contained an extra live track added to Inner Mounting Flame previously issued only on LP.

All of the Complete Albums sets (with the exception of some older music like the Billie Holiday) were remastered again for this series.

It would make sense to at least add some new material to such a set, frustrating as that may be for those who already own all previous CD releases.

Edit: Lon beat me to It. ;)

Oh, wow, wasn't aware of the Mahavishnu ... I got the Original Album Classics box just before the very much nicer one from Popmarket/Legacy came out though ... ah man, stuff like that does suck! Got to find out what that Mahavishnu material is ...

And yes, as I've said before, I'd get a new remaster of Big Band & Quartet, too! But I'm less sure about any box ... didn't go for the Monk box with the quartet albums as I've got all the Legacy reissues of those studio albums.

It's a full disc from the Between Nothingness & Eternity concerts of material from Inner Mounting Flame & Birds of Fire. The Nothingness album now sounds terrific in remastered form (both discs).

The other track is Noonward Race 3 April, 1972, originally released on Mar Y Sol/ The First International Puerto Rico Pop Festival (Atco SD-705).

Oh, thanks! That does sound good! Guess I got to re-buy ... third time for "Bird" and "Flame", second time for the rest ...

Yes you do, great set. When I bought mine, $17,21 plus shipping on Amazon Marketplace.
