Hot Sam is an interesing pianist; if you can, avoid the Collectables Reissue, which is a sonic botch, and get the Japanese Atlantic reissue.

Drummer Donald "Duck" Bailey, in a 2008 interview with writer Don Alberts, said, "And who was [Thelonious] Monk's idol? Hasaan Ibn Ali. Nobody knows that!"

Finally, the lost Atlantic session is being issued. See the announcement, issued today, by Omnivore Records.

It links to a trailer, where one can hear brief snippets from two of the tracks, "Viceroy" followed by "Atlantic Ones."

Where was the acetate hiding all these years?

Tom here, Bertrand. Not sure if the acetate(s) even exist any more — the video trailer for that album says the source was a tape (presumably reel) of an acetate — and I’m assuming the acetate(s) either are long lost, or else not playable any longer (or in worse shape than the tape).

I’m assuming the tape was made decades ago — or at least not recently (how long ago would be totally conjecture).
