Roundsound
I have most, if not all, the Prestige sessions led by Trane. Apprarently there are 11. I have the opportunity for a reasonably good deal on the new Trane leader set, which I interested in because of the remastering and because I can trade in my old Trane CDs. Is there a list of CD's on this set? Also is there anything missing if you get both new sets.? Thanks
Big Al
That depends on which Trane CDs you have. I mean, the Prestige boxes released on Concord contain everything that was in the big Trane Prestige box released by Fantasy. That box contained everything Trane recorded for Prestige except the Miles Davis Quintet sides. The two Prestige boxes released by Concord--Fearless Leader (his leader sessions for Prestige) and Interplay (co-leader or feature sessions)--are all in the big Fantasy Prestige box; a third box, which will contain the remaining Prestige sessions not covered by the first two. When that box is released, the entire contents of the old Fantasy Prestige box will have been re-released and remastered. Hope that helps. It does not contain "Solacium" from The Cats as Coltrane (and Sulieman and Burrell) sit out on the Flannagan trio number.
Roundsound
Thank you for your responses. I was wondering which Trane Prestige CDs is it safe to trade to get the "Leader" set from Concord and not miss anything. I know the 2d set has the sideman sessions, although apparently incomplete. trane_fanatic
The sound on the original 16-disc Prestige box was very well done for its' time (1991). I know several folks on here agree with me. Glad I got it in the Great Concord Blow-Out Sale of 2006. Bright Moments
sorry for what may be a dumb question: does "interplay", "fearless Leader" and "sidesteps" contain everything that is in the previously issued 18-cd box set "John Coltrane - The Complete Prestige Recordings" from 1991? much thanks! jazzbo
The 18 cd set is I think a Japanese only release. The US was 16 cd. The other two cds in the Japanese set were the material of Trane with Miles. This is not included in the US set or the three smaller boxes. That's the only difference I'm aware of. Edit to say: The mastering and packaging may be different between the Japanese and large US sets. Edited December 8, 2009 by jazzbo

Courtest the good burghers of zweitausendeins..
king ubu
I never managed to find the big box at a good price (got plenty of others back then, from zweitausendeins, though). Anyway, I'm happy with the four Concord boxes (fourth being the Miles Quintet box). What's missing are a few tracks without Coltrane: the Quinichette feature from "Cattin'", the trio number from "The Cats", and plenty of Ammons from "Groove Blues" and "The Big Sound" (where Coltrane was only present on a few numbers, playing not very noteworthy alto). Also one of the four Red Garland albums was a bits-and-pieces one, with two quintet tracks, a quartet track with Trane also released on an Art Taylor album (and included on the second Coltrane box, as that Taylor album was one of those jam kinds of albums - or at least the folks at Concord seemed to think so), and a trio track (that album is either It's High Pressure or Dig It, too lazy to check now). king ubu
Added to say: the "old" Fantasy boxes usually did included these tracks, to offer complete albums (such was the case with the Dolphy box, at least). The Rollins box omitted some tracks as well, though, and that one came out before the big Concord flush.
