Greetings folks,

I have a bunch of 78s I recently acquired that I'd like to move due to space issues. I haven't been posting here too long so I wasn't sure how much interest there was here. If there is interest, I'll take the time to type up a list of what I have. A lot of it came from an academic library and most of it is in excellent condition. As an apartment dweller I can't really justify the space they're taking up.

Ideally I'd like to sell as many of them as possible to one person, and the best situation would be someone in Chicago who would be willing to pick them up, but I'd deal with shipping them if the buyer was willing to pay the cost.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll type up a list - otherwise I don't think I'll bother.

Thanks!

The Danimal

I'll take that as a yes.

I've got some football watching to do in the near future, but this evening I'll start cataloging them and post the results here. Lots of them are in the hardcover binder style cases with parchment slips and seem to be in really good condition.

I should note that I'm not trying to make a killing here, I'd just like for them to go to a happy home.

I think there are few (if any) serious 78 collectors on this board.

You would probably be better off trying to find a buyer through the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors (for instance, their magazine usually has ads for buyers of 78 collections).

Selling 78s is a tough go these days unless you have a shitload of Paramounts, Claxtonolas, Dials, etc. Most folks are just happy to find good homes for them. Reality is something like $.10 apiece and haul them away (as a courtesy).

I don't think the time involved in making a list is time well spent unless you think you have something special. Since you are in Chicago, a phone conversation with Bob Koester at JRM/Delmark might be worthwhile.

If you've got pristine 78s of pre-war blues, black gospel or 50's r&b then you'll definately get attention. Otherwise, Chuck's right. The vast bulk of 78s, esp. country or pop crooners, fox trot and mambo orhestras are useless. Listing them individually will be a gigantic waste of time.

If you provided us with maybe ten representative names and disc condition, there's expertise and free advise to facilitate your best move.

Unusual record labels with music by black artists or groups would be interesting. Otherwise, I'm afraid they should be 'filed' in the dumpster.

Thanks for the info guys, and sorry for breaking board decorum by posting too soon with a for sale.

Chuck, I should give Bob a call. I don't think there's much here of value - a bunch of Deccas, Columbias, and some others. I'm keeping the Ellington for myself but there's a lot of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman that isn't of particular interest to my own collecting tastes.

Nor to anyone else's, unfortunately. As a dealer, I can tell you that 1940's big band 78's are quite common and pretty worthless, regardless of musical quality.
