I recently picked up, on LP, the compilation Main Stream Jazz on Blue Note (King Japan, 1983) that collects the Ike Quebec Swingtet 78 masters as well as some material from Jimmy Hamilton. Excellent stuff.

Thing is, my girlfriend is interested in a CD copy. I was researching AMG (is that really research? Doubt it...) and I couldn't find any in-print version of what I have on vinyl. Of course, the Mosaic is way OOP. Now, I see a few other compilations that have what appears to be some of this material, but it's hard to tell what's in print, and what would be the most comprehensive.

Any help would be appreciated.

The seven Quebec sides that appear on Mainstream on Blue Note are on Ike Quebec: Blue Harlem (Proper). This is a "legal" recording in Europe - not so in the U.S. I would suggest burning your girlfriend a copy from your LP before giving any $ to the Proper pirates.

If it's legal in Europe, and it is, then Proper aren't pirates. It's merely illegal in the US. I really hate to say this to you, Paul, but when did America's laws start to apply throughout the world?

I guess I had better think about getting the Classics after the 1944-46 that I've got.

Proper and/or their distributors make Proper recordings available in the U.S. - http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6728925 - as an example. It may be legal in Great Britain, but it's not here. In the U.S., Proper is a pirate label.

Imperium, MG!

The pirates then are CDU and whoever is selling this on the US market.

As for Quebec, there's another legal in yurp, illegal in the US release on Definitive, collecting all the BN master takes and the master takes from Quebec's lone Savoy session. Mighty fine music indeed!

There was of course the Blue Note compilation "Blue Note Swingtets", which was made up by some sides of Tiny Grimes, Johnny Hardee (incl. the great "Hardee's Party"), and two each from the Benny Morton and the Jimmy Hamilton session, if memory serves me right. That was a great compilation, but still it's a major pain that BN never did put out all of that swingtet material in its entirety...

Some US importer is clearly acting against US law in importing this stuff into the US. But that doesn't make Proper a pirate; it makes the importer a criminal organisation of some kind.

Of course, Proper knows what's happening, just as you and I do. But whether the firm can effectively do anymore than you or I is doubtful; only a tiny amount of "laundering" needs to be between Proper's wholesale department and the US firm(s) and the issue is beyond Proper's control.

but but... US firms respect law, US firms don't "launder" anything, anytime, anywhere... that's us swiss who launder money, and you europeans (remember, I'm not one of them!) who are pirates! har har!

Eh? Oh, I see, you're Swiss :D

Err, well, I'm rather pissed about it, but a majority of my compatriots so far doesn't want to join the EU - but then, there are positive aspects about it, too. <_<

There's a wonderful Japanese Blue Note cd, but it was expensive WHEN it was in print. Also, there was a Classics (was there not?)

Thanks, and yeah, I think you are right about that.

Let this thread get away whilst moving and just now getting back to reading the replies. Thanks to all; Nessa offered to burn the material for my GF, as my burn capabilities went out with my burner biting the dust.

You can still pick up used copies of "The Blue Note Swingtets" CD from amazon marketplace sellers. I believe it is OOP but it contains some of the Quebec stuff and is a decent sampler. Check it out HERE

I got that Blue Note Swingtets compilation years ago and it just made me wish that BN would put out ALL of the swingtet material (it probably couldn't be more than 4 discs-worth)...but then, the market for it must be small. But hey, isn't the market for all jazz pretty small?

Anyway, the compilation is quite good as far as it goes.
