CDs? For THIS type stuff? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

As has been discussed in passing over the years, "Classic Gospel" & "Reissued on CD" are two phrases that overall just do not belong together.

But, here's two that should be available w/o too much trouble:

But you need to know that there is sooooooooooo much more.....

Showbiz is indeed wonderful, but not as much as that phrasing...

That second chorus where she settles in and just drops one line at a time with no hurry to either begin or end, just puts it right where we all know it needs to be w/o even appearing to think about it, my god, that is artistry of the highest level.

But that's what showbiz IS.

What did you think of Dorsey? I have the whole TV programme (a Dorsey bio) those clips come from on a VHS tape somewhere, made when British TV was actively making some of the most incredible programmes ever.

If those first sides that Inez made with the Andrewettes right after she left the Caravans ever make it to the digital age, some people are going to be STUNNED.

Thanks to this thread and Mr. Litwack's generous assistance, I've discovered Inez Andrews, the Caravans, and even the Andrewettes. Amazing stuff! So now I'm on a bit of a gospel thing. I already had the Golden Gate Quartet (40's recordings) and the Soul Stirrers with Sam Cooke. Where should I go next?

I suggest checking out the "vintage" work of The Mighty Clouds Of Joy & one or both of The Five Blind Boys (Alabama and/or Mississippi). The Clouds in particular have done some stunningly intense work.

There's a lot more gospel on YouTube - I found tons of good videos some months back by clicking on links to "related videos"... And yes, Inez Andrews was something else!

Now if only someone would get some Dorothy Love Coates uploaded... (I can dream, can't I? ;))

Edit: African music fans might wat to do searches over there on "gospel" + [add name of country]. There's everything from Ghanian pop gospel to Ethiopian Orthodox sacred songs (I'm hooked on the latter!)

There's lots of great stuff on eMusic.com - in the Fantasy catalog. One of my favorites was recorded at the Shrine Auditorium on the 50s (only one mike, though!) and features Joe May, Albertina Walker and the Caravans, the Pilgrim Travelers, Dorothy Love Coates & the Original Gospel Harmonettes, and *many* more. My fave cut is a long medley by Coates and her group - such powerful stuff, and so beautifully phrased/sung!

Given the way Concord is "handling" all that back catalog, I'd recommend grabbing some discs before it's too late...

the title is The Great 1955 Shrine Concert, and for some weird reason, it's listed under "various artists" only. (Not easy to find when searching on artists' names.)
