Chalupa Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Question: does anyone know if the Johnny Dyani Quartet's,"Lonely Flower In The Village: Flower Of Peace / Duncan Village" has ever appeared on vinyl? I know it's available as a bonus track on the CD version of "Song for Biko" but I'm wondering if there is an analog issue.I can't find a complete discography for him. Quote
seeline Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 I'm thinking of ordering some more South African music (mostly jazz related, but I still feel this thread is fitting better than the ZA Jazz one) - here's what I have on my kalahari.net wishlist - any comments? Elite Swingsters/Dolly Rathebe - Woza Elite Swingsters/Dolly Rathebe - A Call for Peace McCoy Mrubata - Phosa Ngasemwa Basil Coetzee - Monwabisi Basil Coetzee - B African Jazz Pioneers - Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival African Jazz Pioneers - Afrika Vukani Linda Kekana - Kodumela Linda Kekana - I Am An African The Best of Allen Kwela (Sheer Sound) I am aware of MG's endorsements of both Linda Kekana discs, and I'm familiar with the African Jazz Pioneers, Mrubata and Coetzee (though I only know him as a Dollar Brand sideman so far). And I definitely have the stray Elite Swingsters and/or Rathebe cut on compilations. I don't see how you could go wrong with Dolly Rathebe. She and Dorothy Masuka are probably my favorites, out of the "name" singers from southern Africa that I've heard. Quote
Van Basten II Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 (edited) A heartfelt recommendation for this one, great instrumentation behind what already is a superb voice. Edited December 24, 2009 by Van Basten II Quote
Van Basten II Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 (edited) Found this at the used CD store, if the rest of the series is as good, might look for the other volumes. Have done no research on the subject, but if the piece was Diby was not some kind of a hit, it is a shame. Vol 1, includes two STONE CLASSICS - the 27 minute version of Soundiata with Mory Kante singing lead and also Salif Keita doing a 14 minute version a few years later. I keep forgetting to buy these sets. Must get around to them next year. MG MG Quote
Van Basten II Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) I'll take that as a strong recommendation to get my hands on the rest of the series -_- Guess it's my lucky day, it's a vey very very rare case where the cds are cheaper buying them from Amazon Canada than the regular one Edited December 27, 2009 by Van Basten II Quote

Here's a Rail Band discography. It was a VERY frequently recorded band (compared to other Malian bands). http://www.radioafrica.com.au/Discographies/Rail.html MG Quote
Stefan Wood Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 Got all three volumes. The first one is hot, but the other two are very good as well. Ordered the first volume of Francophonic, plus the 2 cd set of Orchestra Baobab on Sylart. Quote

Van Basten II Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Not a fan of those type of compilations but it was the first time i saw music of him. A lot more festive than N'Dour Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Not a fan of those type of compilations but it was the first time i saw music of him. A lot more festive than N'Dour Fallou Dieng is terrific! I have a ton of his stuff. Well, not precisely a ton, but everything he had recorded from his first album in 1990 up to my last visit to Paris in 2007. Glad to see there's something available generally in the West. Do you have a track list? MG Quote
