Late Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 Our friends at Dusty Groove have been carrying the following at $6.99 for some time now. Great stuff. Surely there are plenty here who can wax eloquent on these sides. And, a bargain to boot! (Note: You get to hear some precious Harold Vick on Impact. And John Faddis in his Maynard role!) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 Anyone who doesn't already have these, and doesn't take advantage of this offer... ...needs to have their head examined. Quote
Quincy Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 Great stuff. Surely there are plenty here who can wax eloquent on these sides. Eloquent waxing can't be found at All-Music. Though they dish out the stars (all 3 at least 4 1/2) they're a wee bit short on sentences. Thanks for the heads up. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 Thanks for the heads up, too! I remember driving a hundred miles to get a cd of Music Inc. on Strata East about 10 years ago. I think I paid $20 for it. :rsmile: Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 If anyone is only thinking about picking up one or two of these, probably the one of these three NOT to get is "Impact", which suffers from some odd sound-quality issues in it's CD release. The music is still great (really great!!!), and it's not anything that can't be compensated for by a little EQ tweaking on your stereo -- so don't let that stop you from getting all three of them if there's interest in such. But if you're gonna skip one, "Impact" might be the one to skip. But the music, on all three, is fantastic. By way of comparison, these three Tolliver albums are every bit in the same league as the best of Woody Shaw's output in the 70's. Highly recomended. Quote
BFrank Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 I have vinyl of "Impact" and I have always had trouble listening to it. How does "Music Inc" compare in sound quality?? Quote
DrJ Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 IMPACT may have the poorest sound quality, but it's the best musically IMHO, maybe Tolliver's crowning achievement as a leader. As Rooster says, just tweak the EQ and DEAL WITH IT! Quote

The original LP's not exactly a marvel of realism either. Quote
Daniel A Posted September 18, 2003 Report Posted September 18, 2003 (edited) I have vinyl of "Impact" and I have always had trouble listening to it. How does "Music Inc" compare in sound quality?? The CD sounds fine. Perhaps a bit compressed in spots, but not nearly as much was common during the 70s. Probably the original recording was like that. Edited September 18, 2003 by Daniel A Quote
