danasgoodstuff Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 generally I am most definitely not a fan, for reasons that have been hashed and rehashed here, but I do kinda like the everything and the kitchen sink medley that is "how Many More Time", after all if you're going to be over the top might as well go all the way... BFrank Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 Good-ster, there's the ENTIRE "Presence" album climaxing with the nearly-ten-minute "Tea for One". ... and let's not forget the 11-minute "In My Time of Dying" on "Physical Graffiti". [Disclaimer: I hated this band for most of the past 30 years, after about their 2nd album. But something clicked for me about 2 years ago with these guys. I think it was a Robert Plant interview on the Charlie Rose Show. And I suddenly "got it". Now I can't STOP listening to them.] Quote

Sundog Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 Four Sticks always gets my attention. I still really like all of "III" as well. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I haven't listened to Zep in ages. . . .Saw them several times, which was a hoot. I like the bluesiness and the blues tunes on the first one . . . that had a certain "I'm going to make my mark on the music world" vibe to it. Quote
Dave James Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I stopped listening after their fourth album, but that first one...my Lordy me. Some great blues based tunes on that bad boy. My favorite though, is off Led Zep III, the pinwheel album. Since I Been Lovin' You is a kick ass blues if ever there was one. Up over and out. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 DJ, you are right, I can hear that tune right now in my head. . .! Quote
Shawn Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 My favorite is probably Tea For One from Presence, what a tour de force by Page on that tune. In My Time Of Dying is also EPIC, in a good way. There's not much Zep that I don't like... Quote
7/4 Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 In My Time Of Dying is my fave Zep cut. Quote
BFrank Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 In My Time Of Dying is my fave Zep cut. Blues-wise.......yes. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I was always partial to "Traveling Riverside Blues"... This had more to do with its somewhat mythical status circa 1984 than the music itself. It had never been released on any of Zep's albums, and people that claimed to have heard it said it was _unbelievably_ great. IIRC, it was the B side of the "Whole Lotta Love" 45. The guy that had a copy was the hero of the dormitory that year. Quote
Noj Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I love listening to the original blues tunes Zeppelin "borrowed" from in contrast to the arrangements Page and Plant came up with. LZ really had a nicely developed style and so much of what they recorded stands the test of time to my ears. Their version of "Traveling Riverside Blues" is available on the box set. The lyrics "squeeze my lemon 'til the juice runs down my leg" probably kept it a B-Side and not an album cut. Quote
MoGrubb Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I never could give Led Zep a good listen because their overall sound annoys the shit out of me. Quote

7/4 Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 In My Time Of Dying is my fave Zep cut. Blues-wise.......yes. I wouldn't make that distinction. That track has a lot of competition. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I like the version of 'You Shook Me" by the Jeff Beck Group, from "Truth", better than Led Zeppelin's version. Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 (edited) I actually hate Led Zep, for many musical reasons, but I'll tell you the chief one - I've always thought of Plant as the guy who gave us the essential bad-white-guy-trying-to-sing-like-a-white-guy-who-sounds-black model of rockand roll lead singer -others tried before him, but he did it with a vengeance, and it's because of him that we have groups like those bozos from Massachusetts - sorry, very tired today and can't think of the name of the group, the lead singer is the guy whose daughter is an actress - Edited December 28, 2007 by AllenLowe Quote
Uncle Skid Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I'll always love Zep for nostalgic reasons, if nothing else, and there are some really great tunes. But, when I first heard Robert Johnson (especially Traveling Riverside Blues), things changed. "Blatant" was the word that came to mind. Quote

mikeweil Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I never could give Led Zep a good listen because their overall sound annoys the shit out of me. Same here - the singer in particular Quote
