Randy Twizzle Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Until I read this May 1969 NY Times review I never knew that the Woody Herman band played at the Fillmore on the same bill as Led Zeppelin. Apparently things didn't go too well. Quote
marcello Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 In Bill Graham's autobiography, Bill Graham Presents, there are nice sections where he describes Buddy Rich and Rahsaan playing at the Fillmore West. In general, the book is very good until he reaches the point when he closed the Fillmores. Quote
BillF Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Fascinating to read this. I recently read William D. Clancy's Woody Herman: Chronicles of the Herds which dwells on the tensions/problems of Woody's "rock period". Quote

Spontooneous Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 The Coleman Hawkins bio by John Chilton mentions a Fillmore East appearance by Hawk and Roy. (A friend claims to have been there.) Quote
marcello Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 (edited) Graham would at times, rent out the Fillmores to other promoters. Maybe this one?: Art Blakey - Fillmore East, NYC (March 9, 1969) [db 3/20/69 pp.14, 52] Edited December 23, 2007 by marcello Quote
Larry Kart Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 I remember catching the Buddy Rich Band at the dark (lots of black-light stuff going on -- other stuff going on in the dark too), cavernous Electric Playground in Chicago (a very Fillmore East-type place) in 1969, on the same bill as the Rotary Connection (with lead vocalist Minnie Ripperton) and other groups as well -- maybe Canned Heat. Went there with my Down Beat boss Dan Morgenstern -- the idea being that for Rich to appear at such a venue was newsworthy. Encountering Rich backstage with Dan was quite an experience; the man (i.e. Rich) was like an electric whippet, while Dan's normally mellow, laidback manner seemed if anything to become even more that way in response to how "up" Buddy was. It seemed an effective way to deal with Traps, the Drum Wonder. Quote
