TedR Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Very upset to hear this news. Earlier this year I jumped at the chance to drive Frank from Toledo, Oh (he had a gig in downtown Toledo) to Cleveland where he played a brunch concert as part of the Tri C Jazz Fest. One of life's great experiences to spend a couple of hours with him hearing about his life and music. He was a gentle man and a gentleman. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Sad news. I'm happy that I caught him live last year. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 R.I.P. - what a life! I always liked his tone from his first session with Teddy Charles for Prestige - Sonny Clark's first, too! Wardell Gray was on that session. Oh yeah ... Quote
brownie Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Death comes to the Survivor! Sad news Nice images, Mark! Quote
White Lightning Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 A great musician, a true survivor. RIP. Quote
sidewinder Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 RIP - What very sad news to start the day. But his comeback years were great ! Quote
king ubu Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Sad news to start the weekend.... but how great that he was playing and on tour right until a couple of days before, wow! Definitely better than dying away slowly for years! Thanks for the photos, Mark! Quote

JPF Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Everyone should look again at the beautiful picture of Frank in post #19 above. That's the way we should remember him - his alto in his hands, that beatific smile on his face. That's the way I'll remember him. He was the leader on one of the greatest gigs I've ever had the good fortune to hear. It was some years ago at the Regattabar in Boston; not just a very good night, not just an excellent night, but a jaw-dropping, head-shaking, stunningly great night. The group was Frank, James Williams on piano, John Lockwood on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums. And now they're all gone but John Lockwood - take care of yourself, John. Quote
Durium Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 FRANK MORGAN Frank Morgan at one of his last concerts a month ago Enjoy some great pictures from this concert Keep swinging Durium Quote
Kyo Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Listening to Easy Living now. I love his 80s Contemporary albums. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 I was greatly saddened when I heard the news. Frank Morgan was one of my favorite alto sax players of the past dozen years or so. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to see him live a number of times. Thankfully, I have an extensive collection of Morgan's CDs so can listen to him often. Quote
Durium Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 FRANK MORGAN Peace + Love Keep swinging Durium Quote
rpklich Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Sad.... Something about Frank Morgan that I haven't read in his biographies is that two of his Milwaukee high school classmates were Willie Pickens and Bunky Green. Quote
Kalo Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 Sad news. I'm glad I got to hear him a number of years ago in Boston. His concert with Kenny Burrell was perhaps the most mellow evening of live music I've ever experienced. Something special. Quote
Free For All Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 I was just listening to a CD I haven't listened to in a long time, the 1988 Contemporary release "Frank Morgan All Stars/ Reflections". Frank w/Joe Henderson, Mulgrew Miller, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter and Al Foster. Very nice session. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 i am beside myself- i cant believe frank morgan is dead. well maybe i can belive it, but i am sadded and maddened. Frank = true west coast jazz pioneer. i saw him w/ art farmer in a quintet, keeping the bebop spirit alive. art died first but that is beautiful frank got a nother block of years in playing jazz before it was time for him to go. i also cant understand the 30 yrs in prison- is that truly accurate? also what are his earliest known recordings? beside the GNP frank morgan album. hey, i should go play that..... brownie Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 Obituary in The New York Times today. Quote
sidewinder Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 i also what are his earliest known recordings? beside the GNP frank morgan album. hey, i should go play that..... The session on the 'Wardell Gray Memorial Album' (Prestige) must be one of his earliest. A very good one too ! Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 Listening to Easy Living now. I love his 80s Contemporary albums. The one at the Village Vanguard is especially fine. RIP. Quote
MartyJazz Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Glad I finally got to see him when I visited the Pacific Northwest back in the summer of '04. He and Cyrus Chestnut duetted at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival one Sunday afternoon. Extremely enjoyable set. Aside from the music, I recall Morgan having a few very praiseworthy words about Abbey Lincoln who had preceded him on stage. A real gentleman as well as a fine saxophonist. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Just found these clips on YouTube of the late great Frank Morgan. Local great Claude Black on piano and my man Sean Dobbins from Detroit on drums. Quote
