jlhoots Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 (edited) The 3 2CD L'Integrale sets on Soul Note are extraordinary (IMO). There's a review of one of the sets in the new Cadence. Edited December 10, 2007 by jlhoots Quote

Guest Bill Barton Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 I love the Gaslini Plays Monk album too. There's a coughing-in-rhythm bit that just kills me ... Quote
JSngry Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 didnt he anticipate braxton in certain ways? Elaborate, please? Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 didnt he anticipate braxton in certain ways? Elaborate, please? listening to invention(1968), from that soul note disc for that time period with gaslini's big band, it, to me, has a bit of the feel of braxton's 1975(?)creative orchestra recording(though not as edgy). my muscal knowledge is less than 0, so feel free to chasten my uninformed ears. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 The only Gaslini I have is Nuovi Sentimenti, from '66, with Barbieri, Lacy, Cherry, Rava, Kent Carter, J-F Jenny Clark, Giani Bedori, Franco Tonani and Aldo Romano. It's a motherfucker, but I've always thought it sounded a little like Mantler or Carla Bley (which would make sense, given the period and some of the personnel). Africa! is on my list as well ...dunno if anyone here has heard it. Quote

I was looking for exactly such elucidation. Thanks! Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 it's magnificent music, however it's described, and the whole set(6 discs) will soon be part of my collection. i also must find aylers wings and te deum. Quote
king ubu Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 When has Volume 3 of "L'intégrale" come out? I think I've seen it mentioned somewhere before but wasn't aware it was actually available! Vols. 1 & 2 are great! And I second the for the Ayler & Monk discs - but that then is just about all the Gaslini I have... ah no, there's an Italian Instabile disc with him playing (and at least some of the music his, too). Here's the jazz discography from his homepage: http://www.giorgiogaslini.it/dischi.htm I see the disc with IIO is "Skies of Europe" (ECM), one of their best! And I also have the Jelly Roll hommage, good fun, but nothing too earth-shaking. Somehow I do remember a previous discussion of Gaslini (possibly via a Lacy discussion about the material on "L'intégrale" Vol. 2? It's not in the Black Saint/Soul Note recommendations thread, and other than that my search didn't bring any other possible hits... Quote
JohnS Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 His Albert Ayler solo piano cd is exceptionally good. Magnificent. Quote
B. Clugston Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Gaslini and Braxton did an album together in the early 1980s. Gaslini was intrigued by Braxton's title for "Comp. 101," so he drew his own design for the album. I've only heard Ayler's Wings and Skies of Europe with Italian Instabile Orchestra, but keep meaning to hear more. Quote
king ubu Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 two good news: Vol. 7/8 of "L'intégrale" is out on Soul Note and this humble king has just ordered - finally - an acceptably priced copy of Vol. 5/6 Quote
Ken Dryden Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 The only Gaslini album I have is the old "Sit In at the Factory" disc from the 1970s, with guest Jean-Luc Ponty. I haven't played it in years. Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 His Albert Ayler solo piano cd is exceptionally good. Magnificent. Adding a "me too" to "Ayler's Wings". I was intrigued by the idea, I had never heard Gaslini, and I didn't "get" Ayler until I heard this album. The album made me a fan of two musicians! Quote
