connoisseur series500 Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 I recently picked up vol 2 of "One Night with Blue Note" on VHS, and I've watched it half a dozen times already. Tears come to my eyes as I view the late, unlucky Woody Shaw play his solo on "Passion Flower." Kenny Burrell is his usual tasteful self, and Jimmy Smith looks as if he is reminiscing about his long career at Blue Note. Charles Lloyd comes on for three songs and steals the show. He was still in his prime while you get the feeling that everyone else is basically reminiscing. Lou Donaldson gives an idea of what a force he used to be on the alto; and Jack Dejohnette shows tremendous soul on the drums. I can't stop watching this tape. Anyone else seen it? Quote
PFunkJazz Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Yeah, I've watched it, natch. And like you I do feel Lloyd steals the show. Quote
Tjazz Posted September 29, 2003 Report Posted September 29, 2003 (edited) I have vol. 1 and vol. 2 on laserdisc. Supposedly, it's going to be re-issued on DVD. (but some titles will be missing, while others are added) http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...47&hl=one+night Just saw Vol. 2 & 4 on CD at the local store for $6 each. (I have the LP box set, so I passed) Edited September 30, 2003 by Tjazz Quote
bertrand Posted September 29, 2003 Report Posted September 29, 2003 I plan to buy the BN DVD when it come out... However, is there any way to find the four VHS tapes without spending a fortune? I know there are thousands of Woody Shaw videos out there, but I wouldn't mind having this one as well. Bertrand. Quote

Not sure there are four of them, Bertrand. I believe there are only two volumes unlike the cds. Others more knowledgeable would have to confirm this. I am also looking for volume 1 on the VHS format. Half.com offers one at an outrageous price. I only paid around $7 for volume 2!! It was an ex-library copy I found in a record store. I don't have DVD equipment; otherwise, I would wait for that to come out. If anyone has a volume 1 available, please tell Bertrand and I. Thanks. Quote
