Brute Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) Hi All! I held out for Mosaic to release the Complete Keynote Sessions but it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon. So, recently I started picking up the CD series secondhand. I currently own, "The Keynoters" (Nat King Cole), "The Ellingtonians", "Lester Young", "Benny Carter" and the "Coleman Hawkins" set. Last week I ordered the Eldridge and "Swing Trumpets" set and I am waiting for it to arrive. It is a shame that these recordings have been neglected for re-issue, there are some real gems here. Do you have any favorites? Sessions or performances? Edited December 7, 2007 by Brute Quote
sidewinder Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Funilly enough, one of my OOP Mosaic boxes has a old flyer from them offering for sale the Japanese 'Keynote' LP set ! Quote
Brute Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) There is some wonderful music on these CDs and I plan on trying to obtain more but some of the sets can be very expensive on the used market. Edited December 7, 2007 by Brute Quote
jazzbo Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Lots of great music. Try to get the Hawkins four cd set if you can! I LOVE the Lester Young, if I had to have ONE that would be the one! Quote

WD45 Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Those Lester Young sides are my favorite of his. Definitive Records has reissued them. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Pres!!! I love that bowed solo Slam Stewart did on "Sometimes I'm Happy", too - King Pleasure did a vocalese version of that. Quote
Kalo Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 Another vote for Lester, though the Hawk sides are great, too. I've been impressed by just about everything I've heard on Keynote, though I've not come close to hearing it all. Quote
brownie Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 Can't just list one because I can't choose between those two sessions: the Lester Young quartet session with Johnny Guarnieri, Slam Stewart and Big Sid Catlett the Coleman Hawkins quartet session with Teddy Wilson, John Kirby and Big Sid Catlett Quote
Stereojack Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 There are so many fantastic sessions on Keynote. Cozy Cole All Stars (2/22/44) (w/ Joe Thomas, Trummy Young, Coleman Hawkins, Earl Hines, Teddy Walters, Billy Taylor) Blue Moon, Father Co-operates, Just One More Chance, Thru' For the Night "Little Jazz" & His Trumpet Ensemble (4/22/44) (w/ Roy Eldridge, Joe Thomas, Emmett Berry, Johnny Guarnieri, Israel Crosby, Cozy Cole) Don't Be That Way, I Want To Be Happy, Fiesta In Brass, St Louis Blues These are two outstanding dates. Also, I gotta say that the Lester Young quartet session is among my favorite Pres. Quote
Brute Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) Bumping my own thread (hope that's not taboo around here). So I now have hunted down the Coleman Hawkins 4 disc set (got this one as an early X-Mas gift from my wonderful wife), The Roy Eldridge & Swing trumpets 2 disc set (smokes!), the Tristano disc, The Keynoters, The Lester Young disc (fantastic!), The Ellingtonians (nice mix), and The Benny Carter disc (awesome!). Can anybody tell me if the Red Rodney, Red Norvo, and "Small Herd" discs are worth the cash they are currently going for on the used market (holy shit these are expensive)? Additionally, I have been on a Hawkins kick and I picked up a used copy of "Hollywood Stampede" and found a Japanese import of "Thanks For The Memory" on Xanadu (1944 sessions). Both of these are also great and very much in the vein of the Keynote stuff. Care to reccommend any similar small group swing? I have some Mosaics that I really prize that are similar (Hampton Victors, H.R.S., Blue Note Ike Quebec & John Hardee, and Classic Capitol sessions) and I also just won the "Genius of the Jazz Guitar" Christian box set for an amazing $21.50 on ebay (score!). Edited January 8, 2008 by Brute Quote
king ubu Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 You should also get the "Rainbow Mist" disc by Hawkins - it's on Delmark, fits in nicely with the Hollywood Stampede disc and the Keynote box! My favourite session, btw, would be the two that brownie mentioned! Though some of the Tristano material is pretty awesome, too! I have the Prez on various labels, not the original Keynote disc, but I have the Hawkins, Early Bebop, Carter, Keynoters (Nat Cole), and Tristano discs. Being unwilling to pay horrendous prizes, I guess I'll leave it at that... too bad, as there'd be more good stuff on the others! Of course best would be to get a CD version of that old LP box - I would have had a chance to buy that one years ago, but I wasn't interested enough in this kind of jazz back then... too bad! Quote
Brute Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Hi Ubu! Thanks! "Rainbow Mist", I'll put that on my list. It is a shame that the complete Keynote sides have not been reissued on CD in their entirety. I think that Mosaic would do a fine job with those. Does anyone know if there is an online discography available for the Complete Keynote LP set? I have not been able to find any info. Quote
king ubu Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I have the Keynote info somewhere, will have to dig it up. About the Hawkins 4CD set - I always thought that oen was complete? What's missing? Quote
Brute Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) I'm just interested in knowing what has been released on CD and what hasn't. I'd like to obtain as much of this music as I can afford to. There something about these sessions that really jive with me. Harry Lim was doing something right and it's a shame that his label didn't last. Edited January 8, 2008 by Brute Quote

BruceH Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Of the ones I've heard (all of which I like) I'd have to say the Lester Young is my fave. "Just You, Just Me" comes close to Zen. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 The Benny Carter cd (Arnold Ross session and Carter quintet) added 10 alternates omitted from the lp box. Quote
John L Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Wow. I never realized that the Keynote discography was so large. Like many others here, I find the Lester Young quartet session to be something close to heaven on earth. Quote
Stereojack Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 About the Hawkins 4CD set - I always thought that oen was complete? What's missing? Discographies have always listed an alternate take of "Cattin' at Keynote" from the Feb 17, 1944 date. The box and the CD offer only one take, and annotator Dan Morgenstern dismisses the previous information as "a figment of the discographical imagination". Well, the take given IS the alternate, and the master take issued on 78 is missing! Quote
