Claude Schlouch Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Hi folks, Have a small thought for our friend KD who left us 35 years ago. R.I.P. Quote
JSngry Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Beautiful player, truly beautiful. Quote
troyk Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I've always really thought of Mr. Dorham as one of the great arrangers. His bands seemed to take on more texture and life than: Theme - I solo - You solo - He solos - Theme Out of the era. He was just marvelous. I can't listen enough to him. I love when people try to blindfold test me on him. You can hardley ever slip him past me. You'll never be forgotten, Kenny. Quote
Free For All Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 One of my favorites. ....and two of my favorites: Quote
Clunky Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I've never been disappointed with any session I've heard that featured KD. His playing was unique and highly identifiable. Only got Afro-Cuban this year courtesy of the RVG remaster. Love it.... Quote

Peter Friedman Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Kenny Dorham is without doubt, one of my favorite trumpet players. There is a beauty and great depth in his playing that reaches me in a special way. I only remember seeing him live once back when I was living in Detroit. Quote
John L Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Kenny Dorham didn't get me with a one round knockout like some other trumpet players. But over the years, he just continues to grow on me, and has now become one of my absolute favorites. It's gotten to the point that I am likely to buy anything with Kenny Dorham on it. Yes, a "beautiful player." Quote
B. Clugston Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 I've really been appreciating Kenny's work recently. What should I get next: 2 Horns, 2 Rhythm or Blue Spring? Quote
brownie Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Why choose? Get both! You won't regret it Quote

They are both very good. I do like the piano-less context of 2 Horns, it creates some nice open space. Of course, Cannonball is on Blue Spring. Hmmm....... I just checked at Amazon- if you order from the private sellers you can get BS for as little as $5.79 and 2 Horns for as little as $8.29 (plus shipping). Surely the budget will bear that? Quote
