Vincent, Paris Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 (edited) EMI doesn't know how to get the royalties to the people who deserves them. They include : George Adams, Victor Bailey, Tina Brooks, Bobby Bland, Kenny Drew (don't they know at Blue Note that his son is a pianist too), Herbie Mann (man, he just died!), Bill Perkins (him too), Terry Line Carrington (she lives in CA) and many, many others! Don't they have some family around that could get the money? Have a look there ... some people on the board may be able to help ? Edited September 15, 2003 by Vincent, Paris Quote
montg Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Well, for starters they might be able to find Vic Dickenson's estate if they spelled his name right: Vic Dickerson??? Quote
JSngry Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 I called somebody to call Bill Perkins just a few days before he died. Bad timing by all concerned, I'd say... Quote
mmilovan Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Well, for starters they might be able to find Vic Dickenson's estate if they spelled his name right: Vic Dickerson??? They spell it like "Dickerson"? This is EMI's terrible shame! And, of course the other's musician's families deserved it also; if we pay whole lot of money for rights, we want our money to be in right hands. Did they give something to Barney Kessell, who is in struggle with cancer? Quote
GA Russell Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Bobby Blue Bland continues to put out albums on the Malaco label. He ought to be easy to contact. I didn't know that EMI has any of his material. I'd like to know what it is! Quote

Did they give something to Barney Kessell, who is in struggle with cancer? Kessel isn't on their list. That's not to say that *somebody* didn't probably owe him money, but the tone of your post suggests that EMI somehow screwed him. Rather than this being "EMI's terrible shame," I think the website is a good thing (mistakes notwithstanding). It shows that they're at least *trying* to pay royalties to those who deserve it. Quote

Peter Johnson Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Allmusic doesn't have a date of death for Baby Face. Does anyone know if he's still with us? Still playing? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Other well known jazz musicians from the list: Serge Chaloff Tadd Dameron Erskine Hawkins Tania Maria Art Taylor Julius Watkins Baby Face Willette Finding the rightful heirs is not easy if they don't contact potential payees. I am in a quandry about royalties to more than one item in my small catalog. Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Allmusic doesn't have a date of death for Baby Face. Does anyone know if he's still with us? Still playing? Baby Face Willette is the Holy Grail organist from the heyday. NOBODY knows what happened to him, and many have tried to find him. Searches have been done to no avail. Discussions with many of his old musician friends (Ben Dixon, Lou Donaldson, John Patton, ect..) have turned up no clues. It's like he evaporated. Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Or just stopped playing. Look what Gigi Gryce did, as revealed in Rat Race Blues, and Willette certainly did not reach the level of success that Gryce had. Quote
Brad Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Hmm. Hasn't the demise of Baby Face discussed elsewhere repeatedly. I seemed to recall that he had in fact died. I don't know that to be a given fact. I just did a google search and couldn't find that much. I just seem to recall it. Quote
