Steve Reynolds Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Me Likey to hear the GREAT John Edwards and cohort drummer Steve Noble with Herr Brotzmann!!! Quote
Holy Ghost Posted March 28, 2018 Report Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) Yeah ten years later, but what an incredible drummer Han Bennick is: worth rehearsing how exciting he is still! Hope this allowed: And this from Amherst: Kinda like Mingus/Richmond, Brotz/Bennink are another magical combo. Edited March 28, 2018 by Holy Ghost Quote

The 2006 Amherst concert is available on CD on the Bro label (run by Eremite). Some of his best music is available on that label. Bought a ticket to see Peter Brotzmann in Melbourne 5 minutes ago for about USD 15. Can't believe it, every local pub band charges more. Quote

Yeah, I couldn't believe it either when a club here in Cleveland last year was only asking for $20. Albeit, it was a strange line up, I kinda was hoping for a "Die Like a Dog" line up, but regardless, it Brotz! Now that's a steal not a deal! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 28, 2018 Report Posted March 28, 2018 Was it with Heather Leigh? Quote
Holy Ghost Posted March 29, 2018 Report Posted March 29, 2018 Sounds right, it was a female and she was playing some weird form of a synthesizer or something. It was just him and her. Quote

Although Brotzmann is known for his intensity, I think that in duos he shows that in his heart he is actually a very melodic reedist. I know that Brotzmann puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us, but it was kind of surreal to see him perusing the Whole Foods salad bar with Leigh. He comes across as a pretty quiet, self-effacing man, but I have never spoken to him at a gig. Edited March 29, 2018 by Justin V Quote
mjazzg Posted March 30, 2018 Report Posted March 30, 2018 I spoke to him briefly after an Oto gig and he was charming, almost self-deprecating in his description of the sets he'd just played I've been enjoying this album a lot recently.the combination really clicks for me. Probably the first time I've knowingly listened to a "stoner rock band" as the label describes them Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 30, 2018 Report Posted March 30, 2018 I interviewed him in 2002 and he was a very kind and yes, self-effacing gentleman. My interactions since then have been similar. He's a good person in addition to being a fantastic musician and artist. Quote
romualdo Posted March 31, 2018 Report Posted March 31, 2018 (edited) Totally blown away!!!! just seen that Brotz is doing an Australian tour & playing here in Brisbane on May 5 (Institute of Modern Art) On 28/03/2018 at 5:45 PM, Misterioso said: Completely agree! I've looked on a couple of sites here in Australia & there do not appear to be any tickets on sale as of yet. Edited March 31, 2018 by romualdo Quote

After seeing the announcement on PB's homepage, I subscribed to their email newsletter. A few days ago, they announced the concert and provided a link to oztix for purchasing tickets. The venue here is quite a bit rougher than the Brisbane one and certainly not known for attracting a jazz audience. Will be interesting. Quote

Д.Д. Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 Otoroku is releasing Brötzmann's last live gig: https://peterbroetzmann.bandcamp.com/album/the-quartet Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 will buy the CDs-- the 4LP imo is too expensive though I'm sure it is a nice package. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 It is and it's sitting right here. I was at one of the nights Quote
colinmce Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 Gave this a couple listens on streaming, and it's much stronger than I might've assumed. Great stuff. I'll pick up the CDs soon. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 There was no indication at the time in his playing that he would die so soon afterwards. He'd been audibly pacing himself for the last few previous visits but was still playing as strongly if not as ferociously or with as much duration. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 I was at the second night. A genuinely great gig. SN was at his absolute best and JA was a fantastic foil to PB. Quote
Д.Д. Posted Sunday at 01:52 PM Report Posted Sunday at 01:52 PM (edited) I listened to the stream of The Quartet, and, to my surprise, enjoyed it greatly. First of all, Brötzmann plays a lot of alto, which I really like (I remember at one of his concert I attended he played blistering mean alto behind the closed curtains during warm up only to play no alto at all during the concert itself). Second, possibly thanks to physical limitations, he is more concise that usual and less prone to falling back on repetitive licks. Adasiewicz's vibes add a melancholic tinge, and Noble is just fantastic. Good stuff, I might get the CD in honor of the great Mensch. Edited Sunday at 01:56 PM by Д.Д. Quote

Don't regret missing this show. Quote
Niko Posted Tuesday at 08:01 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 08:01 AM I saw that duo and it was definitely worth going even though their records may not be my go-to Brötzmann... But what was totally amazing was a trio with Leigh and Toshinori Kondo added on tp and electronics... It's been a while and I forgot the details but Kondo somehow managed to organize the sounds and had a great interaction with Leigh in a way that made it all come together even better Quote
