White Lightning Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Back in the 60s and 70s (and even before) some of the best groups were led by drummers. There were "Celebs-Drummers" in Rock and Fusion - not anymore. When I talked with Curtis Fuller a year ago he told me that bone players couldn't lead combos back in the 50s and 60s. "All the combos were led by drummers", he said. Mr. Fuller is of course exagurating a bit, but today things are completely different: There are many combos led by hotn players, Pianists and even Bassists, but there are few led by drummers. So why did the drummers gone out of the limelight? Quote
Free For All Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 A few current/recent drummer-led groups that I can think of: Matt Wilson Roy Haynes Winard Harper John Hollenbeck Jeff Hamilton Jack DeJohnette (other than the Jarrett trio) Jimmy Cobb Jeff Watts Our very own Johnny E and the Reptet Quote
Joe G Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble Along with Johnny E, Phil Kelly leads a big band, so what are you talking about Barak? There's two drummer/leaders on this board alone! Quote
thomastreichler Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 There are some big bands led by drummers: John von Ohlen leads the Blue Wisp Big Band in Cincinnati Tommy Igoe leads the Birdland Big Band The Taylor / Fidyk Big Band is co-led by arranger Mark Taylor and drummer Steve Fidyk Sherrie Maricle leads the DIVA Jazz Orchestra Quote

Of course! One of the best in the business today. I did not list it because you mentioned Jeff Hamilton already in your previous post. Quote

Yes, although I initially was thinking of him in the small group context (his trio). Quote

Elissa Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 All these drummers have their own bands too: Billy Hart Joe Chambers Ben Riley Tain Victor Lewis Victor Jones Charli Persip Joey Baron Cindy Blackman Terri Lynn Kenny Wollenson Al Foster Idris Muhammed Clarence Penn Quote
Free For All Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 So, Barak, you were saying? Quote
kh1958 Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Not to mention Chico Hamilton and Bobby Previte. Quote
AndrewHill Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 Don't forget Tony Williams! Quote
White Lightning Posted December 1, 2007 Author Report Posted December 1, 2007 Yeah, yeah, I'm familiar with many of the names you guys namedropped so affluently... But I'm still not convinced... What Drummers are "Superstars" these days? Which of the "Jazz-Celebs" are Drummers? In the age of Jazz-Celebs of Marsalis, Lovano, Brecker, Holland, Metheney and their likes, the drummers are missing. Why the lineage of Drummers who were celebs like Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, etc... is no more? (You may continue throwing rocks at me now... ) Quote
Van Basten II Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 Don't know a jazz musician can become a superstar in this day and age, but i would say that Aldo Romano and Daniel Humair would fit the bill in terms of recognition on their own continent. Quote
Elissa Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 Greg Hutchinson and Montez Coleman are my picks for drummers with legs, after Tain of course. Ari Hoenig as well - he has a solo album on which he plays Night in Tunisia note for note, on a kit. Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 I know this isn't purely a "jazz" example, but Max Weinberg has been leading the Late Night w/ Conan O'Brian band for over a decade now. Quote
Elissa Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 Max Weinberg the one drummer i think i actually despise, no offense. Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Max Weinberg the one drummer i think i actually despise, no offense. None taken -_- just a reference, not a personal taste. Quote
AndrewHill Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 A couple more: Andrew Cyrille Beaver Harris 360 Music Experience Milford Graves...well not technically a leader but led his own solo dates. Can't recall if Elvin Jones was mentioned... Quote
AndrewHill Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Shelly Manne ...I feel like I'm on a roll (get it?) with drummers tonight... Quote
BillF Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Among drummer-led groups today - The Dylan Howe Quintet from the UK. Quote
