Calgary was awarded the 2009 Grey Cup game. Won't this be the 100th anniversary of the first one? A couple of years were missed during World War II, so Toronto is sheduled to get the 100th game (I think in 2012). But as I recall the first game was in 1909. Go Varsity!

After a slow news week, there are a couple of interesting items today.

The first is that the Als have hired Joe Paopao as a consultant. That tells me that he will be waiting in the wings if their new head coach with no Canadian rules experience gets off to a slow start.

http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home

*****

The second item is about the NFL in Toronto. I don't need to go through all that you know about how 20,000 of the NFL "season" tickets have been allotted to Argo season ticket holders. The remaining NFL tickets will go into a lottery. Over 100,000 have applied for the lottery tickets. But since it didn't cost anything to apply for the lottery tickets, that 100,000 figure may not indicate the amount of interest in the tickets that the press would have you believe. It could be 100,000 people who have no interest in going to a Buffalo Bills game but who figured that a lot of other people would, so they applied (at no cost and no risk) hoping to flip the tickets at a profit.

Well, the deadline for the 20,000 allotted to the Argos was yesterday. And the Argos sold only 14,000 season tickets.

Now you know that not all of the Argos ticket holders are interested in the NFL games. And you also know that the NFL tickets are priced (averaging $150. each) to appeal to people for whom money is no object. That is to say, if a corporation wanted the NFL tickets, it would buy Argos tickets and be assured of getting good NFL seats. But the corporations didn't do that. So that makes me wonder what the market in Toronto will be for the Buffalo Bills games.

The Ticats have released Jason Armstead. I have always felt that he was overrated, but the move was made because he refused to sign a a contract extension that called for a paycut. The Riders traded Armstead to the Ticats for Corey Holmes. Now both of them have been cut for money reasons.

Training camps opened today.

In the past, I have started a new thread for the season itself (as opposed to the off-season hot stove league).

However, at this point this thread has 3,285 views. I suspect that many of those views are from CFL fans who are not jazz fans or members of the board. Maybe they have bookmarked the thread.

So to keep these folks coming to the board (and maybe viewing our jazz-related threads as well), I have decided to rename the thread rather than start a new one.

The league broke off talks with the NFL regarding extending their past agreements. I'm not sure what the league has to offer the NFL. The provision to allow players to skip their option year to jump to the NFL was written into the latest contract with the CFL players union, so that bargaining chip is gone. With the NFL horning in on Toronto, it looks like the NFL doesn't care what the CFL thinks or does.

I always enjoy listening to the Riders games because they have a unique flavor - most of the sponsors are agricultural products, such as tractors and combines, the wheat pool and hybrid canola seed. Perhaps there are US college teams with similar situations but I am unaware of them. I imagine that many of the Sirius subscribers who heard last night's Sask broadcast got a kick out of that.
