GA Russell Posted October 4, 2010 Author Report Posted October 4, 2010 No change in the standings this week. All four western teams won, all four eastern teams lost. Calgary Stampeders 46....Montreal Alouettes 21 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W880.htm Well, the Als missed Kerry Watkins. And Damon Duval injured his leg, but the two kicking subs did OK. The problem was that the Als' defense didn't have an answer to Henry Burris's passing game. The Als' defense is good against the run, so for the rest of the year I expect the Als' opponents to be throwing. ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 27....Toronto Argonauts 16 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4346247 The Riders clinched a playoff spot. Dalton Bell looked much better than I expected. Cory Boyd reached 1,000 yards rushing, and Andy Fantuz reached 1,000 yards receiving. ***** British Columbia Lions 16....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 14 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W882.htm Decent game. The Bombers led 10-0 at the break, but the Lions came back and kicked a field goal with 12 seconds left to win it. ***** Edmonton Eskimos 37....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W883.htm Great game. The Ticats had a 21-7 lead midway through the second. The Eskimos led by 8 late, when the Ticats scored a TD with about a minute to go. They went for the two-point convert, and failed. ***** This is the second consecutive unusual year for the league. Last year, Montreal won almost every game, Toronto lost almost every game, and the other six teams played .500 ball from start to finish. This year, no team stands out (although Calgary looks to be the favorite), and right now there is not a single team in the league that one can say stinks. I think the Bombers have lost five or six games by 4 points or less. Quote

GA Russell Posted October 12, 2010 Author Report Posted October 12, 2010 Today is Thanksgiving Day in Canada, so two games were played today. This week's games were rematches of last week's games, and in every case last week's loser was this week's winner. So all four Eastern teams won, and all four Western teams lost. So again, there was no change in the standings. Hamilton Tiger-Cats 36....Edmonton Eskimos 11 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W884.htm Whatever pizzazz the Eskimos showed the past two weeks they didn't have this week. ***** Toronto Argonauts 24....Saskatchewan Roughriders 19 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W885.htm Surprise! I don't think that anyone expected the Riders to lose to the Argos at home. The teams appeared to be evenly matched, so maybe the Argos played their best game of the year, and the Riders one of their worst. ***** Montreal Alouettes 46....Calgary Stampeders 19 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W886.htm It was 30-4 at the half. Ben Cahoon broke the record for career pass receptions with 1,007. Damon Duval was injured, so the Als signed rookie Colt David from LSU. He went 6 for 6 in FGs. ***** Winnipeg Blue Bombers 47....British Columbia Lions 35 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W887.htm Terrific game! The Lions led 32-11 after three. The Bombers started Alex Brink at QB, who went a dismal 5 of 19 and was benched for Stephen Jyles who brought the team back. The Lions had a three point lead with 27 seconds to go. Javon Johnson returned the punt 61 yards to put the Bombers in FG range, and they tied it 32-32 with no time left on the clock. In the first OT both teams kicked a FG. In the second OT the Bombers scored a TD, and failed on the two-point convert (which is required in OT this year). Needing a TD to tie it, Casey Printers threw an interception to Deon Beasley who ran it all the way back. Quote

GA Russell Posted October 18, 2010 Author Report Posted October 18, 2010 Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30....Toronto Argonauts 3 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W888.htm The Argos opened the scoring with a FG, but did nothing after that. Their defense kept it close for three quarters. The Ticats clinched a playoff berth, but it is very likely that the Argos will make the playoffs as well. ***** Edmonton Eskimos 31....British Columbia Lions 28 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W889.htm The Eskimos won it in overtime, and they are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. I'm kind of bummed that I missed most of this game. This was a Vancouver game that started at 10:00 pm my time. I've been fighting the onset of a cold, and I suddenly got very sleepy at 9:30. I listened as long as I could, but at 10:45 I turned it off and went to bed, and slept for ten hours. Paul McCallum was supposedd to kick for the Lions, but apparently they did not submit the game roster to the league officials in a timely fashion. I had never heard of this happening before. They were required to play with last week's roster. So Sean Whyte put on a uniform after the game had started, and played. ***** Montreal Alouettes 22....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W890.htm The Bombers looked surprisingly good in the first quarter, and led 11-2, thanks in part to Colt David missing two FGs. They did nothing for the rest of the game until two minutes were left and they were trailing 22-11. They quickly went 107 yards for a TD and made the two-point convert. They then almost recovered the short kick. They held the Als, and got the ball back with 27 seconds to go. They got to the 7 yard line, where they fumbled with less than 10 seconds to go. With the win, the Als clinched first place in the East. This was the Bombers' seventh loss of the year by four points or less. ***** Calgary Stampeders 34....Saskatchewan Roughriders 26 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W891.htm The Riders led 19-10 at the half, but the Stamps came back strong in the second half. At this point it is mathematically possible but highly unlikely that the Stamps won't finish first. The Riders have already clinched second. The Riders lost both Luca Congi and Rob Bagg to injuries, both probably for the remainder of the year. Both are Canadians and will be very hard to replace. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 19, 2010 Author Report Posted October 19, 2010 Jake Dunlap has died. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him at an exhibition game between the Als and the Rough Riders in 1979. Very personable. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=337954 Quote

GA Russell Posted October 24, 2010 Author Report Posted October 24, 2010 (edited) A weekend of upsets! Hamilton Tiger-Cats 40....Montreal Alouettes 3 http://scoreboards.c.../final/W892.htm Surprise! Actually, this seems to happen every year - The Als clinch first place early, and then become beatable. The Ticats have won three in a row. ***** British Columbia Lions 36....Calgary Stampeders 31 http://scoreboards.c.../final/W893.htm Surprise! Great game. The Lions led 20-0 early in the second quarter, but at halftime the Stamps led 28-27. It was all FGs in the second half. The Stampeders would have clinched first place had they won. ***** Toronto Argonauts 27....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 8 http://scoreboards.c.../final/W894.htm Stephen Jyles left the game in the first half with an arm injury, and was replaced by Alex Brink who couldn't do much. The Argos clinched a playoff spot with the win. The loss eliminated the Bombers from playoff contention. ***** Edmonton Eskimos 39....Saskatchewan Roughriders 24 http://scoreboards.c.../final/W895.htm Surprise! Ricky Ray had incurred a rib injury, so Jared Zabransky started for the Eskimos. The Riders scored a TD with 3 seconds left to make the score look more respectable. Recent acquisitions Jason Armstead and Derek Armstrong scored TDs for the Eskimos. The Riders have now lost three in a row. I believe that with the Riders' loss, the Stamps have clinched first place. PS - Remember Ryan Dinwiddie? I didn't know that he is the Riders' backup QB now. Last I heard of him he was playing Arena ball. Anyway, he came in very late in the game and threw two TD passes. GA Russell Posted October 26, 2010 Author Report Posted October 26, 2010 Eric Tillman has signed Kerry Joseph. This suggests to me that Jason Maas has no future with the team. In addition, Ricky Ray's injury was to a shoulder muscle rather than his ribs, and so that casts doubt on his durability. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/eskimos-sign-kerry-joseph/article1773087/ Quote

GA Russell Posted November 1, 2010 Author Report Posted November 1, 2010 I find it hard to be interested in late-season games in which one of the teams has its final place in the standings already determined. You never know just how hard they are playing. Unfortunately, all four games this weekend had one team like that - Montreal, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg. Montreal Alouettes 37....Toronto Argonauts 30 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=cfl/scores/final/recap.aspx?id=896 The Als scored TDs on their first two possessions, and it looked like it would be a blowout. But the Argos fought back, and led 30-20 after three. Montreal came back to tie it at 30, and on the last play of the game, Damon Duval attempted a 36 yard FG to win it. He missed, and the Argos kicked it out of the end zone. The Als kicked it back in. The Argos couldn't get a handle on the ball, and the Als fell on it to win the game. ***** Calgary Stampeders 55....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=cfl/scores/final/recap.aspx?id=897 The game was never in doubt. ***** Edmonton Eskimos 16....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 13 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=cfl/scores/final/recap.aspx?id=898 This was an interesting game because it featured Jared Zabransky (who has played little) going against Joey Elliott (who first played last week). The score was tied at 10 at the end of regulation. The Bombers set the league record by losing their eighth game of the season by four points or less. This is the Eskimos' first three-game winning streak since 2005. ***** British Columbia Lions 23....Saskatchewan Roughriders 17 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=cfl/scores/final/recap.aspx?id=899 A loss would have eliminated BC from the playoffs. As it is, they need to win next week and Edmonton needs to lose for the Lions to get in. This was the Riders' fourth straight loss. Travis Lulay is looking better and better each week. Quote
GA Russell Posted November 2, 2010 Author Report Posted November 2, 2010 Calgary Stampeders 55....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24 http://scoreboards.c...cap.aspx?id=897 The game was never in doubt. I forgot to mention that late in the game the Stamps put Jesse Lumsden in, and he scored a touchdown. Quote
