Montreal Alouettes 39....British Columbia Lions 38

http://www.canada.com/sports/football/cfl/Lions+last+second+barnburner/8822970/story.html

I began watching/listening to pro sports regularly in 1960. I remember watching the seventh game of the 1960 World Series, but I was too young to appreciate how special it was. What I remember most about that game is not Mazeroski's home run, but Kubek getting hit in the throat by the ball when it took a bad hop.

It's very possible that tonight's game was the best I have ever seen or heard (of any sport). If you go here, you should be able to watch the video of the game:

http://video.tsn.ca/?dl=cfl-gamesondemand/null/1/0/137744/video/0

The Als were playing without nine starters due to injury. The Lions jumped out to a 15-0 lead. From then on, the Als would score, then the Lions would stretch the lead, then the Als would close the gap again. That went on the whole game.

With ten seconds to go, Als rookie QB (and third string) Tanner Marsh threw a 57-yard bomb to Eric Deslauriers, who caught the ball though covered well. So on the last play of the game, Sean Whyte kicked a 14-yard field goal to win it. That was the only time the Als led.

What a game!

I thought of another two games I've seen that rank pretty highly. Both were from the 80s. One was a 1983 USFL playoff game between the Philadelphia Stars and the Chicago Blitz. That was the best game I have ever attended. The other was a game on ESPN about 1988 - an Australian rules football game between the Hawthorn Hawks and somebody, maybe North Melbourne. I remember Gary Buckanara kicking the winning goal as time expired. I also attended the 1996 Grey Cup which was a great game, but which was marred by a bad call which may have decided the outcome.

I note that Lowell Ullrich's column linked to in post #1598 above says that the Eskimos have signed Hugh O'Neill.

The Argos looked good early, but Ricky Ray went down, and that seemed to rejuvenate Calgary's offense. Backup Zach Collaros didn't have a very good game this time.

Early in the fourth quarter Kevin Glenn was also injured, so he was replaced with Bo Levi Mitchell, who looked better than Collaros.

No word yet on Ricky Ray's shoulder injury.

I forgot to say last night that Rene Parades' field goal streak ended when he missed a 35-yarder. Later in the game when he hit a 42-yarder, the announcer said that it was his longest of the year. So apparently he set the record for consecutive field goals with nothing but short ones.

Not an interesting game. Buck Pierce started for the Bombers, and Justin Goltz relieved him.

CJ Gable has solidified his spot as the Ticats' running back.

The Ticats have now won three straight, and the Bombers have lost six straight.

This was a surprise. The Eskimos played tough the entire game, and almost won it.

Kory Sheets has now rushed for over 1,000 yards in only eight games.

Lawrence Tynes was treated late last week for a penicillin-resistant infection called MRSA. He needed toe surgery to scrape out the infection. It was Tynes' right foot. Is that his kicking foot? I think he is a left-footed kicker.

Sandro DeAngelis has played the last two games, so today the Bombers released Justin Palardy.

They also signed Brody McKnight, Jason Boltus and a former Jacksonville Jaguar named Mike Sims-Walker.

Ricky Ray will be out 6 weeks (or 4-8, depending on whom you talk to) with his shoulder injury.

The appellate court in Ontario has overruled the arbitrator's ruling that Chris Williams' contract with the Ticats is still in force. The players union has said that it therefore considers Williams to be a free agent. It looks like the league will appeal.

I'm listening to the Lions broadcast of their game against the Ticats, and the announcers made two interesting points:

1) When the Lions lost to the Als last week, it broke their winning streak of 27 games when they had been leading after three quarters.

2) So far, no one in the league has kicked a 50 (or more) yard field goal this year.

Leo Lewis has died at 80. I had his bubble gum card in 1959. I don't recall how he fared in the fans' vote of the league's best players about ten years ago, but he was surely one of the best running backs ever.

The Lions led throughout, so this was not as interesting as the final score might lead you to believe. Nevertheless, the Ticats never gave up.

It has been announced that this year's Grey Cup halftime entertainers will be people I've never heard of before. I suppose that they are all Canadians.

Hedley

The Sheepdogs

Serena Ryder (national anthem)

The Sheepdogs are from Saskatoon and won some kind of band competition the other year.

In a big surprise, Justin Goltz led the Bombers to an 18-14 halftime lead. But the Riders completely owned the second half.

I believe that Chris Milo has not yet missed a field goal this year, and that he is up to 23 straight.

Kory Sheets is off to the fastest start in league history after nine games with 1149 yards rushing. Willie Burden had 1132 after nine games in 1975.

The Stamps' next two games are against the Eskimos. If Jon Cornish rushes for 190 yards total, he will reach one kilometer lifetime against the Esks.

You would think that by now I would have learned my lesson. After one the Stamps led 17-0, and after three it was 30-7. This was one of the most boring games that I have listened to in a very long time. So I stepped outside to chat with some friends, and returned with a minute to go in the game. The Stamps led 37-34, and the Eskimos had the ball and were marching down the field! It seems that the Eskimos scored three touchdowns in five minutes, and made a game of it. Well, the last minute was great, anyway!
